check out my new valve covers

Just picked these up. I talked to the guy and if enough of you guys want a set we can get a group buy price. Anyone?

I already have a pair, although they aren't red.

They are amazingly heavy (not that this is a bad thing).

I found two people that sell similar valve covers, the one I bought from, and it looks like you too, and the guy from the Spyder group.

There seems to be a little difference in the way they are machined at the bolt holes and whether or not the lettering is polished.

The guy I bought from claims his are the original and the others copied him.

Kevin, I have a set for the Type IV.
I could use three of the copper crush-washers, if you're making a deal.
Four would be nice, just to make sure they're all the same.
8mm ID, I believe.

Those are cool Kevin I had them on my 2275.

Cory, the guy Kevin is getting them from uses rubber o-rings, not copper washers.

Will the oil leak from this valve cover? The reason I asked because my engine used to come with the bolted type valve cover, and no matter what I did, it always seems to seep oil on the valve cover. So reading here people said to change with the genuine VW valve cover with the clip which I did and it never leaks since. I don't want to get a valve cover that looks nice but seeps oil.

There are several versions of these valve covers made by a few different people. The first few batches that we saw were very prone to leaking oil. I do not recall who made these. At least one of the later versions, made by Greg of V. Spyders had an additional machined lip to support a valve cover gasket and did not seem to leak.

Just a little info. on these valve covers. They are a direct copy of Dario's covers. They leak and, if you have ratio rockers, the rockers will hit the valve covers.

Although the covers I'm selling look the same, they are different in that they have a special sealing lip and don't leak and have room for any ratio rockers you have on your engine.

I must of had the ones that Larry mentioned. I drove long distance with no issues. Must use the correct gaskets(stock type). The guy that I sold to went with some fancy and expensive gasket and the Valve cover blew off under sprited driving.

Marty, I doubt the problem was the gasket but rather he didn't install them correctly. If it was the gasket that blew out then it probably didn't fit correctly.

Yep, it was one of the two. Like I said, I never had a problem and they look great!

Larry, you still have some of those copper washers rolling around?

Cory, No, I don't think I do.. Did you check at places like King Bearing, Monarch Bearing or virtually any shop that sells bearings?

I can get some but it won't be soon. If I get a few orders for valve covers, I will drive to Stanton, CA (Vintage Spyders) pick up the valve covers and also some copper washers... It's about a 50 minute drive from my home.

Rather than copper washers, use a Dowty seal
Far better, reusable, and will not leak.

Well hell I'm game. $140 and they won't leak, however I have never made a set of valve covers leak no matter what ones they are. I have a few secrets on how it install a gasket and it is not silly-cone!

Copper washers = McMaster-Carr.

You guys must get out more than I do. I keep going to Fastenal for stuff, but it seems like their stores are getting smaller. I can't find half the stuff I used to there.

What Carey said. My experience w/ these kinds of things (cast covers, held in place w/ shoulder bolts) has been uniformly bad. They leak. They look very cool while doing so, but in the end the stamped steel w/ bail fastener of the original VW and 356 VCs are much more reliable. IMHO.

What's the point? With the exception of the Hoopty, these things are invisible on Speedsters unless you crawl under the car and there's nothing in the way. If I'm spending money on bling I want it to be visible.

My thoughts exactly, Lane. With my sidewinder, you can only see the left one unless the exhaust is off.

Or on a Spyder, right, Lane? Cory, did you lose some copper washers? I have some extra, as I didn't use them on mine. 8mm ID, right?

Danny, these covers went through at least two pairs of hands (not counting your machine work) before I got 'em, and I'm pretty sure those washers and one of the solid ones went the way of the dodo before I got them.

I think they look cool on a Spyder, but they are all but invisible on a Speedster, hence not being worth the $$, IMHO.

Yea you can't see them at first, but hey no one knows how big the engine is either until you step on it, or how nice the stereo sounds until you turn it up. So don't put down something just cause you have to look for it. Everyone has thier own idea of cool......

You can see them when your bending down looking up the skirt as most guys do.
