Hi,

Indicators:

Does anyone know the correct wiring for a Chesil indicator stalk? I fitted mine today, but the colours in the build manual don't match the stalk itself!

I wired it in following the instructions (where poss) and used the diagram where the colours don't match, to no avail. I have the link wire on the hazard switch (which works), but still no joy.

Does anyone have any experience of fitting this part on a Chesil?

Oil Temp Gauge:

When turning on the ignition, the oil temp gauge goes straight into the red zone. I've checked my wiring is as per the manual and it's such an (apparently!) simple circuit I can't see the problem. Has anyone come across this before and knows a fix?

Thanks for any help on the above 2 issues. I'm trying to get them fixed on Monday.... failing that, I'll have to speak to Chesil on Tuesday.

I'm not sure if the gauges Chesil uses are the same Chinese ones that VS and JPS use. If they are, at least with the oil temp gauge, if the needle goes straight to the red zone, that could indicate it is shorting out. That only happens when you ground out the wire from the sender directly to the block; maybe there's something wrong with the sender.
Mark,

As per Ricardo, try disconnecting the oil sender; the gauge should show zero as there (should) be infinite resistance. If it still shows max there is a fault in the wiring to the sender (or in the gauge) ; if it now shows min there is a fault with the sender.

Regarding the stalk, mine wired up exactly per the manual (page 70)

Chesil colour <-> VW colour
Brown _______ <-> Black/White & Green
Yellow ______ <-> Black/Green
Grey ________ <-> Black/White
Purple ______ <-> White
Red/Black ___ <-> Brown/White
Black _______ <-> Brown

Are all the terminals of your hazard switch occupied? You should have split the green/blue wire to go the two terminals left over once all the other wires were attached (30b and 49 I think). It sounds like ignition switched power isn't reaching the stalk from the hazard switch.

BTW Chesil's instruments are made in the UK by Caerbont Automotive Instruments (once smiths)

Cheers for the tips guys. I'll try playing around with the sender today.

As for the wiring, the problem is that the colours on the wires from the VW stalk don't match what's in the Chesil manual!! I've managed to get the main beam switch working (and the horn sounds all the time, but I think that's 'cos I didn't get all the right bits when Chesil supplied the steering wheel), so there is power there.... I'll keep fiddling and if I still don't have any joy, I@ll ring Chesil in the morning.

Thanks!

Got it all sorted cheers chaps!

I did a bit of electrical jiggery pokery and worked out the correct wires and the indicators worked first time.

As for the temp gauge, I think I've got it sorted - I had a dodgy earth on the back of the gauge. I'll give the engine another try this weekend and let it get upto temp.

Thanks for all your help!
