I have a set of chrome valve covers that came with my car. I noticed them leaking so I change the gaskets, and they still leak badly.

I've read the chrome tends to warp due to the heat. Also, I've read that stock black cover are the best for desipating heat.

Anyone else have chrome covers? Do they leak? Advice?

thanks.

Paul, it's usually the bails...they lose their tension. sometimes you can re-bend them and they will hold tight for a while. My mechanic recommendes "German Parts" Black valve covers and never chrome. He asserts that the chrome reduces heat dissapation by reflecting the heat back into the head. Black lets the heat dissipate out. And he also says the brazilian covers, chrome covers, and aluminum covers all leak eventually.....german, black thats what he says works best and leaks least.

Most important, be sure that all surfaces, head and valve cover are absolutely clean and free from any old gasket material. Scraping the head/valve cover surface with a metal object will gouge it and cause a leaking problem....A green "Scruffy pad" is the better choice and works well.
If you have finned aluminum valve covers, over tightening the two center bolts will cause them to distort and pull away from the head mating surface and leak.
I've tried different sealants to coat the gaskets prior to installing them. A light coating of wheel bearing grease on both gasket surfaces seems to do a good job of sealing them.
Never use a gasket sealer this will take you forever and a day to remove at a later date when changing the gaskets in the future....don't ask me why I know this.
As mentioned above, good quality German black stamped valve covers with good bales are the best there is.
