You explained this awhile ago when I installed a CHT gauge on #3-something that the gauge doesn't compensate for ambient temps. In the winter it reads 350F.Now when its in the 80s F it reads lower-330-340. Please re explain.
The gauge measures the the temp difference between the hot end of the special thermocouple wires and the cold end of those wires. An uncompensated cht gauge is typically calibrated assuming 70F at the cold end. If the hot side is 350F and the cold side is 70F, the gauge will read 350F. If the cold side is 50F, the gauge will read 370F. If the cold side is 90F, the gauge will read 330F.
Hi Joel- Justin said it way better than I could; all I know is that when uncompensated the gauge will read lower than it should when ambient is above 70'F.
