Finally, I got time to tinker and seem to have solved the chuffing problem. I replaced all the gaskets from the carb down to the cylinder head (new and clean), installed a Pertronix billet distributor and set the timing to 30 degrees BTDC full advance. I haven't heard the chuffing since.

Now I have another weird problem. When I am cruising at normal speeds (2500 rpm) the engine starts running really rich. I have a CB Performance A/F monitor that gets me in the ballpark, and the spark plugs are black, confirming the gauge.

I've had main jets in it from 155 down to 135 and they seem to make very little difference.

Engine details:

2187 cc
44 Weber carbs
Idle jet: 57.5
Main jet: 155-135, currently 135
Venturi: 36mm
Air correction: 200
Exhaust/intake: 35.5/40
Exhaust: 1 5/8" with Magnaflow muffler and A1 sidewinder

Any ideas?

Rod.....I run a 1915cc CB Perf. engine...Weber 44 IDFs with 60 idle, 155 main, 200 air corr. jets, 36mm venturi.....The engine is run rich to help keep temps down.....According to the WEBER MANUAL, you are way too lean on the main jet and too small on the idle jet...Per the suggested start point for jetting your engine.....The trouble shooting section indicates a probable problem with the float levels or float valves.....Reccomended jetting is 160 main,200 air,60 idle...

At 2500 rpm,(under 45 mph) your engine is probably still using the idle/low speed circuits.

Hope this helps....
