Wolfgang posted on SOC in the past about the cpi 1 12.5 gallon fuel tank. I have a few questions if anyone can:

On a CMC can you install it like in a stock sedan or does it have to be reversed like CMC has you do it?
(Just why did CMC have you install it in reverse? - I can't remember.)

Does the filler pipe require shortening as per CMC?

How much additional height do you think it has over the stock installation? (in other words how much "trunk" space will I lose?)

Would there be any advantage to building up the base in the Speedster to level it so it  corresponds to the original VW layout?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Exactly. Two years ago, before I had much experience behind the wheel of on of these cars, I brought up the thought of a larger gas tank and someone mentioned, as Tom just did, two hours or so and about 200 miles is all about one can take behind the wheel. I have found that to be a good interval whether one likes it or not. A center hood fill gas cap (which is much easier than a side fill of some way, I'm certain) is on my wish list, but in the grand scheme of things, it gives you something to do while stretching one's back at the gas station.

on the way back from UGA last week we had to make a pee stop for my wife, 3 or 4 gastations, all of witch were closed @ midnight when we were there, but good ole whataburger was open 24~7.good thing the car was good to go the rest of the way of the 850 mile day trip. so just be sure to map out stations that ARE OPEN when you head out on the road of life for a streach or two.

Thanks Wolfgang

I have been carrying a can of Fix-a-Flat for years. I really appreciate your response. I won't have it in time for Carlisle but it will be nice to be able to take a pee break and still have a chance to find a better price for fuel.

I am thinking about doing this because the old '66 tank probably only holds 7 gallons max and then don't make any left turns. Knowing I can drive home after closing time will be a relief.

That was done by routing out a template 3mm deep in 20mm Mdf, then again with 4mm Mdf. Sandwich the steel between and with the 4mm on top as a guide, a few hand chisels modified and hammer start tapping away. Oh yeah and lots of patience :-)
Cheers guys,
Mango, spot on. I did split a stock tank. Thought it would save me the hassle of fabbing something up. Besides l managed to hit the 80ltr target with the stock bottom half and what l had in mind calculated. I did loose a few ltrs with the cut-out to the back which is for the twin brake servo mounted under the scuttle panel. I did baffle it to to help with sloshing from cornering, braking and booting it. Managed to modify the sender which now reads as it should to. And l still get to carry a spare wheel.
