does any body put the filler on the fender? 12.5 gal? how much do they hold now? mine always holds $20.00
Exactly. Two years ago, before I had much experience behind the wheel of on of these cars, I brought up the thought of a larger gas tank and someone mentioned, as Tom just did, two hours or so and about 200 miles is all about one can take behind the wheel. I have found that to be a good interval whether one likes it or not. A center hood fill gas cap (which is much easier than a side fill of some way, I'm certain) is on my wish list, but in the grand scheme of things, it gives you something to do while stretching one's back at the gas station.
on the way back from UGA last week we had to make a pee stop for my wife, 3 or 4 gastations, all of witch were closed @ midnight when we were there, but good ole whataburger was open 24~7.good thing the car was good to go the rest of the way of the 850 mile day trip. so just be sure to map out stations that ARE OPEN when you head out on the road of life for a streach or two.
I'll take some pictures and measurements tomorrow. It is a direct fit in CMC - nothing needs to be altered. You must use their gas cap to seal it properly. My engine hood lid isn't carpeted yet - it closes with no interference. Forget about even a temp spare tire fitting though.
Thanks Wolfgang
I have been carrying a can of Fix-a-Flat for years. I really appreciate your response. I won't have it in time for Carlisle but it will be nice to be able to take a pee break and still have a chance to find a better price for fuel.
I am thinking about doing this because the old '66 tank probably only holds 7 gallons max and then don't make any left turns. Knowing I can drive home after closing time will be a relief.

Richard, could you share some details of your tank ? Wall thickness, type of welding, any pics etc. ? Thanks.
Trying to figure out how to upload pictures using photobucket??? if antone wants to chip in?? then l will show you what l made with details
thee was also a dude across the pond who had to fender mount the filler as part of MOT registration. i cannot remember his name though...
i will say that having a big motor and a small tank is a PITA.
That is some tank!
Doesn't it make the car front heavy when it is full?
Seriously, very well done.
Now l got the hang of the picture upload here's a few more shots of my tank.
Hey Rich - you got some MAD SKILZ! Nice fabrication on that tank!
Hope Cory doesn't see that huge tank! Think his fuel cell is like 5 gallons. Must be a shock to fill it up - 21 gallons is about what my SUV holds.
How did you make the rectangular stampings?
if the big motor is done right and the trans matches it you get beter mpg so the small tank isant as bad if it were a small motor that was using more fuel..trying to keep up with the big dogs.
awesome idea!! split a stock tank in half and weld a new top part! genius
did you weld in any internal baffles to help with the sloshing?
How did you make the rectangular stampings?
That was done by routing out a template 3mm deep in 20mm Mdf, then again with 4mm Mdf. Sandwich the steel between and with the 4mm on top as a guide, a few hand chisels modified and hammer start tapping away. Oh yeah and lots of patience :-)
Mango, spot on. I did split a stock tank. Thought it would save me the hassle of fabbing something up. Besides l managed to hit the 80ltr target with the stock bottom half and what l had in mind calculated. I did loose a few ltrs with the cut-out to the back which is for the twin brake servo mounted under the scuttle panel. I did baffle it to to help with sloshing from cornering, braking and booting it. Managed to modify the sender which now reads as it should to. And l still get to carry a spare wheel.
The CIP large tank measure 7.5" from mounting floor to the top of the chrome cap.

Hey guys thanks for all the input (output?). You have given me plenty to think about while I spend the next two weeks in Fort Lauderdale. Even though the weather requires the Speedster the wife requires the Camry and the Camry has a bigger tank and better mpg so.............. and I do love her.
See you all in Carlisle.
