Clean air filter - a lesson learned

I learned the same thing with the Red Man, although in my case it's both the air cleaner and the mass air flow sensor.  When these parts get dirty, you have to deal with surging, poor idle, lack of power and sooty exhaust.  Several parts were replaced before this simple maintenance procedure was performed.  Lesson learned!  

Dirty air cleaners means less air into the carb. Less air into the carb without adjusting the mixture = rich.

I wonder if that's what's going on with my car?  What's the best way to clean gauze kadron air filters?  Soap and water?

Yup...been there, done that and still feel like a stunned fool. I'm a high mileage idiot and should know better but little things can make you look into bigger things in a hurry....

K&N  sells a cleaner. I have some but never used it, so I can't vouch for effectiveness.

I have used the K&N cleaner and oil to good effect.  However, the last time I cleaned the filter, I was out of that brand so I just used Simple Green and did a very thorough rinse followed by a drying period in the sunshine.  I think it worked just as well and at a fraction of the cost.  

Thanks Hoss.  I'll use this stuff up and try simple green, we always have that around the house.

I appear to be out of simple green, but I do have some 'purple power'. Any concerns with using that?

My vacuum cleaner takes the same dust filter as my carburetor. I am a very, very, lucky man.
