Clearance

I am converting the front drum brakes ('66 pan) to disc, with my goal being to use wheel adapters so that I can keep the 5 lug wheels and the nippled hubcaps. The problem is that the caliper sticks out aprox. 1/4" past the hub, so the adapter will not clear it.

Has anyone else encountered this?

What disc brake conversion kit are you using? I got my disc brake kit from Type 1 Only (formerly SoCAl Imports) for $499 and had no problems with fit. But you also mention adapters. So I'm, assuming you purchased a late model kit with 4-lugs? Is the kit oem? I have several friends that installed Ghia disc with no problems mounting a wide-5 adapter to them.

Glenn: The kit is a late model Beetle 4 lug kit, but not K. Ghia. I believe that I got it from So Cal last spring, but can't be sure.

Do you have any idea if the spindles in these kits (Beetle vs K. Ghia) are the same? I could get a set of the Ghia calipers if they would bolt up.

Ghia & Beetle front spindles carry the same part #s. If your utilizing a ball joint front end, you'll either have 66-67 spindles or 68-later.

Glenn: The spindles are the '68 and later style. I will check into a set of K. Ghia calipers.
