If you want to use a string to pull the new cable in (not really necessary in my opinion, it pushes in easy enough), you'd have to attach it to the transmission end first, pull the old cable out from pedal side, detach the string from the old cable and attach it to the new cable's transmission end, then pull on the string from the transmission end. However, you will need to get the cable started in the clutch tube inside the pedal mounting hole by hand as it's likely to get hung up if you only pull on the string to start.

The part that's a bitch is getting the pedal assembly reinstalled while keeping the cable eye on the clutch pedal hook. A rubber band or small zip tie is a handy way to keep the two together as it's installed.

I totally agree - a small rubber band on the clutch pedal "hook" is the way to go.

For the rest of the cable, just remove the old one and then start the tranny end termination inside of the cable tube.

Put on a pair of disposable gloves.

Put a plastic trash bag in the driver's footwell to keep the carpet clean.

Coil the cable onto the driver's foot well in a big loop (16" or so) so it'll feed into the tube easily.

Put a big (Grape or Kalamata Olive size) glob of automotive grease into the area of one hand between your index finger and your palm.

Grasp the cable with that hand such that the cable is going through the grease to lube it.

With the other hand on the ungreased section of the cable, push the cable through the tube until it comes out on the Tranny end.  Keep sliding it through the grease all the way in so the entire length of the cable is greased.  You may have to remove the Bowden Tube from where it mates with the pan to get the end to come out - sometimes it pops right out, other times it gets hung up there.

Toss the greasy glove and put on a clean one (Cleanliness is......Well, you know).

Get your pedal cluster in the close vicinity of the hole and pull a little of the clutch cable out, slip the loop over the hook and secure with a rubber band so it can't slip off easily (I use one from a bundle of scallions, but I guess a Broccoli Band would be good, just not one too wide).

With everything together, angle the pedal hook into the hole, try to keep it upright (grasping the pedal arm upright should do it) and push everything into the hole, angling it around to keep it straight.

Before you snug it down, replace the accelerator cable and replace the brake push rod.

Replace the two bolts in the cluster base and snug them down.

Replace the push rod stud spring and retainer clip.  Make sure it is caught on the bottom to make the pedal return to upright.

The rest should be self-evident at the pedals, but go out back and re-assemble the bowden tube and cable adjuster end, then adjust the clutch cable for 3/4" at the pedal or (better) 1/8" at the actuator arm on the side of the tranny.
