Clutch pressure plates

I was going to use a Kennedy stage 2 clutch (2,100 lbs.) on my new 2,387cc engine but many experienced performance VW people have told me a Kennedy stage 1 (1,700 lbs.) will work fine due to the weight of a replica. I'm going to use a stage 1; if the engine fries the friction plate it will be time to move up to a stage 2...
