I am completely changing the interior in my CMC Flare. The original kit fiberglass bucket seats, rear seat with back rest and door panels are in excellent shape. No tears. They were originally white vinyl. I used the duplicolor vinyl paint to change the color to black and red. the bucket seats come with the tracks. The door panels have a bit more design to them than most of the Speedster door panels. The interior will be available late this fall after the upolstery shop makes a few templates. Make a reasonable offer.

Joe,
I'm interested in your rear seat setup.
Is that an original CMC item, or a personal add-on?
I ask because I have two little girls (4 and 7) already questioning the apparent lack of any suitable second row seating in my CMC, and was already thinking about creating some look-a-like cabriolet/coupe type rear seating.
Can I ask how the seatbelts for the back seat are anchored? Did you need to add some additional bracing into the frame?
Cheers,
Jim.

Jim, I am try to keep this as a complete set. Not really interested in parting it out. It is an original CMC Speedster kit rear seat. The rear seat belts were anchored to the fiberglass which I didn't like at all. I have two children also whom love to sit in the back. I plan on fabricating a tube structure beneath the rear seat with anchor points for the seat belts. When I get my upolstry completed I could sent you a template .

Joe,
I understand about not wanting to split the pieces up.
If you could send a template, it would be really appreciated (by me and my daughters!).
I agree that the seatbelts need to be anchored to the frame. Looks like a reasonable excuse to go buy a welder! Any suggestions or recommendations?
Cheers,
Jim.

No problem. Email me you mailing address. If you are planning on lite welding less than 1/4 thick a 110vac unit is fine. Just follow the recommended duty cycle. Stay away for cheap Habor freight and JC whitny welders. Get one that you can run gas an or flux core. The gas is nice ...much easier to use . Cleaner welds. Just make sure you shut the bottle valve off after using or you will empty the bottle. Lincoln , Miller and Horbarts are good. I have a Century 155 110VAC that I will getting rid of soon . I went over the duty cycle and burned up a diode. A friend of mine is going repair it. At the time the welder was down we needed one to repair a late model stock car. The timing was right the car owner bought me a brand new 220 vac Lincoln. So I will not need the Centry unit once it's fixed. Paid $400 may ask $280. Comes with the regulator. Keep in mind I am talking Mig wire feed welders and not stick or tig

Joe,
I am also interested in your rear seat template as I have two boys 5 and 7 who like to ride in the Convertible D. When you have the template I would appreciate it if you could mail me a copy as well.
Thanks,
Karl

Looking at a couple of 356 coupes today got me thinking about alternatives for the rear seat.
Has anyone ever considered constructing a second row seat that resembles those of the coupe or cabriolets?
Looking at the space available in the CMC body it looks like it could be possible to create some seats that, whilst not exact, at least would look similar.
I realise that it would be a confluence of body styles; having a cabriolet rear seat in a vehicle with a speedster windshield and sidecurtains instead of windows, but *it* could work.
I borrowed a set of 356 seat bolsters from a friend and bought some foam board from home depot. Thought I might try to mock something up to see what it looked like.
At the end, if it doesn't work out I can always use the seats like those in Joe's car. Which I understand are pretty close to the original speedster.
Any thoughts, comments or suggestions?

Jim,
I had the same idea for my Envemo 356 Cab back seat. Keep us posted on your progress.

Karl,
Interesting to hear that your cab replica doesn't have them anyway.
Am covered in foam chips at the moment, but things are looking promising. Will post some photos later this week.
Joe,
Sorry to have hijacked your thread about the CMC interior. I will post any further information in a new thread.
Cheers,
Jim.

For an idea on rear seat belt bolting locations, this is what I did.
For the outside belts, use the factory bolt hole at the top of the VW casting uprights, the ones on the end of the torsion housing. Originally used to hold the VW body on, might or might not have any use depending on kit manufacturer, but a good solid bolt location for the belt?
On the center or inside belts, I used the bolts that are part of my aftermarket front transmission strap.
Had to cut 3 holes to slip the belts through at the crease of the rear seat.

Bob , if you are mount the seat belts to the torsion / shock mount castings is the belt material exposed to the outside elements? Road dirt , grease , engine heat, etc will break down the nylon webbing of the belts. Not good. In the ol racin days it was a rule to change out our 5 point harness belts every three years because of the harsh exposures. I am not saying that you 're going to racing around with kids in the back. You want the seat belts to work properly without failure when you need them.
Joe, you're correct, anything on the underside of the fiberglass tub would be exposed some what to the elements. Truthfully, I don't use this car intentionally in bad weather, but have been caught in a few downpoors.
Remebering what my Speedy is like in the rain, come to think of it, everything on the inside the tub is exposed to weather also.
Best advise, use some common sense. Also, for what it's worth, while kids do fit in the shelf/back seat area of a Speedy, they won't for long! From what I've seen they just keep on growing. Enjoy it while you can.

Bob, I have to say at least they are mounted securely. My rear belts were mounted to the glass. Not good. I plan on changing the mounting.

I'M INTERESTED IN YOUR INTERIOR, BALL PARK FIGURE ON WHAT YOU WANT?

Frank . The price of a new interior for Speedsters is $1800 - $2000. That does not include the rear seat back rest in most cases. My interior is in great condition .... no rips. The bucket seats come with the tracks. I'll throw in the seat belt . $500 is what I like to get. I am saving up for a nice steering wheel.
Jim , I'll make some templates of the seat components next week. I'll have access to a large printer scanner to make copies.

Here is a picture of the rear seat. I have made a paper template tonight and will make copies tomorrow. The Final price for front and rears $280.00. Bad night ... while making carbon fiber panels I broke open a bag of cabocil. It's everywhere. Not good to breathe!

Hello Joe,
Were you ever able to make the copies of the rear seat supports??
If you would prefer, I am more than happy to sent you some money to cover postage.
Please let me know.
Cheers,
Jim.

Jim,
I have a rough template sketch copy of both sections of the rear seat. I have 8 copies. The back rest just has a dense foam pad that is cover with vinyl. Send me your mailing address to my email address. All previous emails were lost on my PC.
