Sounds like the tubular chassis Metal Crafters frame (Romulus, MI) that CMC offered as option couple years (1987ish). That sounds like a top notch CMC for $20k.

Metal Crafters were about 20 miles from me. Maybe I should have gotten one of their chassis.
I've never seen a photo of the complete Metal Crafters chassis but they look to be a great improvement on the VW pan and suspension. I bought my CMC in 1988 but didn't get anything from CMC on it so assume it was just a separate chassis available. I can't find old ads for it so no idea of the cost. I've seen maybe 4 cars on SOC over the years with one.
I visited Metal Crafters when I was starting my long build and saw a complete chassis. It was not an option from CMC. I seem to recall that the cost back then was between $1500 and $2000.
