my vintage/cmc gauge has been working OK since 1990. Suggest try and use the former sender, callibrate in a can of boiling water. I would guess at either bad/inappropriate sender or an err in wireing. From your symptoms I guess at a bad sender.
it read fine untill last year when i take wire from sender to ground it pegs gauge and reads 0 when off which i beleive shows gauge is ok replaced sending unit with one from classic instruments same thing
