Does anyone know the capacity of a stock CMC gas tank ? My fuel guage doesn't work so I'm always guessing. I have read that 16 gallons is an upgrade size.

Most tanks are around 8 gallons
And they are in most cases a VW tank, not made by CMC
I bought a "16" gal from Cip1, BS! it held 13 filled to the brim....I contacted them and they could give a rats butt, last time I dealt with them..
Fuel gauge I will add that to the To Do List , cu Sunday :~)
I think VW is 8.5 gal. The CIP one was advertised as 16 but seems to be more like 12.5 gal which is how it is NOW advertised.

High capacity gas tanks will fit all standard Beetles 62-74 and Ghia 62- |
Thx for all the info. I would have guessed about 9 gallons. So does the 13 gallon tank (not 16) require mods to fit it into a CMC ?
In some CMC - FF you need to turn the larger tank around others it drops in

OK- that's interesting.
It fits in CMC but then the temp spare tire does not!
Some tanks are notched to allow space for the steering column, which means they only fit one way. A quick look at the underside of the tank will tell you what you've got.
I would suspect that VW tanks are closer to 8 gallons, or 30 liters but what do I know? Regardless, it ain't a whole lot of gas, for sure. Seems like I'm filling up every third night out (but I have my foot in it a lot).
Can't really speak to a 13 gallon tank - never seen one - but the 8 gallon one seems just about right for a 66-year-old bladder on a trip........
The tank can be turned around, a bit of light work with rubber mallet will clearance for the column.
From 1971 Owner's Manual - 10.5 gallons or 40L
