wow jeff, I'd seen a copy on the cmc speedster project and it has the i.d.# & a space for the model, yet no year in it. Streetbeats sent me a sample plate and their's has both also, but they identify the year, or does everybody just guess it's a 57'? I have the invoices, the body kit's and it says classic speedster and a C' body.
I have un-yeared CMC too and am wondering what year to call it too! I did a quick history check and found that "the Porsche 356A, in both T1 and T2 forms, was available from 1955 to 1959 in four basic body styles: Coupe, Cabriolet, Speedster and Convertible D. In addition to the pushrod engined cars there was also a four cam Carrera range. The T1 ran from October 1955 to March 1957 when it was superseded by the T2 - the major visual change for the later body style being the adoption of teardrop rear lamps." I see few replicas with the old beehive rear lights -- early all seem the have the teardrop ones. So guess 57 (late) thru 59 (T2) would be more correct registration years. Darn, I wanted to go with 55 since next year it would represent a 50 year old car.
OK, the year that you bought your body (or the year in which it was made) bears NO resemblance to the replicated year!!!!!! THAT is defined (loosely, I might add) by what you put on the car for trim.

I bought my flared Speedster directly from CMC in November, 1993.

The invoice identifies it as a 1993 "Custom Speedster Kit"

The Certificate of Origin (COO) shows the same thing, along with the Vehicle Identification Number which, in this case, is the body only and is prefixed with "SC" for "Speedster Custom" (or "Speedster Californian" if you believe their literature).

The COO states that the model is a "Kit Body"

The body's metal ID plate has a space for the VIN, which is the same as the VIN on the COO, and also has a space for "model" but on mine that is left blank.

Somewhere in past posts either from George Brown or me or others the differences between 356A models were identified, but, basically, if you have Beehive tail-lights you're pre-1957 and if you have horizontal teardrop tail-lights you have a 1957 or later (I know, I know.....there are many more differences, but those are the most obvious - you can get into split windows and all that stuff. Get a good book and research it).

Look back at those older posts for more details.

Hope this helps........I'm going back to listen to Jimmey Buffet
