I need to know what to check to resolve my speedometer needle from fluctuating. The cable seems to turn ok. Not sure if it is the gears in the speedometer itself or the cable. I am having trouble removing the cable at the speedometer. It seems extremely tight. I am assuming it is not a left hand thread.
any help on diagnosing would be greatly appreciated.

What position is your speedometer in? Is it in the left, middle, or right position? With the standard VW speedometer cable your speedometer can not be in the far right position, it needs to be on the far left (IIRC). I have the GPS enabled speedometer and arranged my gauges as per an original Speedster and can't remember anymore where the speedometer had been. Hopefully none of the prior owners rearranged the gauges into the wrong position causing a kink in the cable or anything detrimental.

My speedometer is to the far left. The needle was fluctuating all the time. I tried to get the cable loose, unfortunately some one had glued the nut on the back of the speedometer to the cable and I broke it off trying to get the cable loose. It seems like my old saying, “No good deed goes unpunished.”

Thanks for the response.

There was some one here a couple months ago with a set of used Vintage gauges.  The come in 3 colors though - white face w/chrome bezels, white w/brass bezels, and black w/silver bezels.  The gauges also are not a standard size - bigger than 356 repro and smaller than 914 gauges.  So if you decide to replace them - the dash has to be re-fiberglassed and painted (or covered with something).

Here's one set (black)
