Cmc speedometer fluctuation

The CMC Vintage gauge?  It could be a not so gradual bend in the drive cable, cable worn or needing lubrication, or the square hole in back of speedo not so square any longer.  I can't recall threading of the nut on the rear but it shouldn't be that tight.  Maybe connection was fixed once with JB Weld and screwed back on?

What position is your speedometer in? Is it in the left, middle, or right position? With the standard VW speedometer cable your speedometer can not be in the far right position, it needs to be on the far left (IIRC). I have the GPS enabled speedometer and arranged my gauges as per an original Speedster and can't remember anymore where the speedometer had been. Hopefully none of the prior owners rearranged the gauges into the wrong position causing a kink in the cable or anything detrimental.

My speedometer is to the far left. The needle was fluctuating all the time. I tried to get the cable loose, unfortunately some one had glued the nut on the back of the speedometer to the cable and I broke it off trying to get the cable loose. It seems like my old saying, “No good deed goes unpunished.”

There was some one here a couple months ago with a set of used Vintage gauges.  The come in 3 colors though - white face w/chrome bezels, white w/brass bezels, and black w/silver bezels.  The gauges also are not a standard size - bigger than 356 repro and smaller than 914 gauges.  So if you decide to replace them - the dash has to be re-fiberglassed and painted (or covered with something).

I can get a speedometer that closely matches the diameter size of the dash hole. The concern I have is that it says it is calibrated at 1000 rpms at 60 mph. I don’t know how to determine if this is the correct calibration I need for the speedster to read accurate speed.

I know 914/912/911/924/944 and VDO gauges will work and read fairly accurately.  Note that if you swap out all the Vintage gauges you will need new senders. IM used 914 gauges in their early cars - good quality gauges (cept for plastic ODO gears) but the tach is huge. (I have a collection of 914 gauges).
