Good looking car.

A couple of questions to help generate interest:

  • Is that black or dark green?
  • Is the deck lid hinged? It doesn't appear to be. Do you have the hinges?
  • The chromies - are they standard 4 lug or possibly wide 5?
  • What year is the pan?
  • IRS? Swing?
  • Disks? Drums?

Best of luck with the sale,

Ted

Dave - What's skinny on year of manufacture for importing? I see that in some ads from European buyers.  I have same factory docs showing my kit was built and shipped in '89 by CMC.  It too sits on a '71 pan with VW title.  I also have original 1989 FL Certificate of Origin.  Car has yet to be completed and registered with any state.  Does that qualify as manufactured in 1989? Or would it be from date of first officially registered?

That's a good question, Wolfgang. The Canadian Import regs just say that the replica has to have been built at least 15 years ago and says nothing about the year it was first registerd as far as I know. Does your car have any type of data plate with date of mfg on it ?

One thing I'm sure of up here in Ontario, is that if a replica was built on a VW pan of a certain year, the car would not be able to be registered as a VW for any reason.

I'm not sure what year in particular you're referring to, but mine is reg'd as a '67 Beetle and I just (14 mins ago) got Ont plates for it.  Could be that I'm in a small town which makes it easier, though.

Maybe try going to an MTO on the outskirts, like Manotick or Barrhaven or something. They may be more lenient?

Well, I too was of the same mindset as you (from what I read on our USELESS Customs website....) but thought I'd give it a shot anyway.  Also why I waited till I was outside of the GTA so I can visit a smaller office so I figured it might be a worthwhile suggestion.

There WERE a couple of moments that I held my breath when the computer didn't accept the information and the lady had to ask the MFWIC for help, but after those couple of touch-and-go-moments, we were homefree!

Ok, back to the regularly-scheduled for-sale topic! Sorry for the drift

This thread is a good reminder that our cars are unique, especially when it comes to registration.  When you think about it, it shouldn't be surprising.  Example: California has about 35 million registered vehicles.  The specialty construction method of registering replicas (SB100 as we call it) allows for 500 registrations/year.  Small wonder that the DMV clerk you encounter will have little or no experience with it.  Different states and countries will have a percentage of variation, of course, but the principle remains that we may know more about the process than the clerk who is charge with enforcement.  That's where patience and good manners, even if forced, pay off.
