Hey, Greg! Your build manual is different from mine from 1993. Mine only shows two header-to-windshield clamps and we all know that you need three to get the center of the header pulled in properly. Just another idiosyncrasy in the CMC build documentation over the years.
My early CMC only has 2 latches also. Should I be looking for one for the center? Anyone have eyes on a supplier?
A third latch in the middle of the Speedster header helps to keep the center of the top from lifting up off of the windshield frame, especially at freeway speeds. If you hardly ever put the top up on your Speedster and drive around, or if you never take it out in the rain with the top up, it might not be worth it for you. On top of that, CMC used a latch that is often quite hard to find, so alternate methods of securing the top header have been found.
This has been discussed ad-infinitum on here in the past. Go up to the search spyglass and search on "windshield center latch" and you'll get lots of hits from $ to $$$.
Our "Speedstah Guy Emeritus", Jack Crosby, highly recommends replacing the CMC latches with those from Vintage Motorcars Inc. "They work better and are easier to work".
This is the middle latch that Kirk at VS did, it has a Riv-Nut that receives a 14 x 20 threaded plastic knob. The slotted plate swings down and hooks the top of the mirror rod, this is as a different rod than stock as the top part extends 3/4" before making the 90 degree bend.
Or you could do it the easy way with one of these....and it will keep the center part of the header bow down tight at 60 mph in rain.
