It's also interesting to note that, for the CMC Manual, the lengths and sizes of fasteners (nuts and bolts) seem to be more of an off-handed suggestion......Sometimes they fit right, quite often they do not.

Still, if you're heading out to the local ACE Hardware store or Fastenal dealer, the list will give you a good start on what you'll need.  Buy in bulk in boxes for a MUCH cheaper overall price.  Do that and you may save $50 bucks or more across the car, just on fasteners.

You might also think of buying only Metric fasteners, too, as this would be in keeping with the original VW as well as the 356 you're trying to replicate.  Couldn't hurt....

Just a note- Working on the car is a lot easier if the hardware is all metric. Think of when travelling in a group or when you're out on the road- it's a lot easier to share tools and help a friend (or someone help you) with a problem if everyone isn't a mish-mash of different nuts and bolts. This comes from running dune buggies in the mountains- a couple of the guys have used whatever to put their cars together and if they haven't packed the specific tools then the fix is a lot harder. Thanks guys,

13, 17, 19mm - that's about as 'original' as you'll need to be.

Actually...there was a CMC nuts and bolts kit - it was one of their sales tricks to get a few more bucks out of you.  You paid for your Speedster kit and it gets delivered but when you went through everything you realized all of the fasteners were missing,  So you call them up and they said "Oh, the nuts and bolts kit is additional cost".  Of course they didn't mention that to you when you purchased the kit and were finalizing the deal.   I can't recall exactly but I believe the cost was like $150 or $250.

When you were negotiating the deal they were always throwing in additional stuff to sweeten the deal - a AM/FM radio, a tonneau cover, etc. but never any mention of the nuts & bolts kit.  Luckily, I heard about their little trick so when I wrote my letter formalizing the final deal I included the nuts & bolts kit.  So one day the Speedster kit arrives and the fasteners are missing.  So I called them up and ask what happened to the fasteners and they say "Oh, the nuts and bolts kit is additional cost". So I told them to go back and check my notarized letter and sure enough they did and came back to the phone and said "Oh, OK they'll ship out later today."
