No worries - It is an OK number.

It is a strange number because it is for the body ONLY and is not a Vehicle Information Number ( VIN ) for the entire car.

The CMC "Certificate of Origin" number you show was often (but not always) attached to the car either in the front storage compartment or inside of the driver's door opening.  Most governments do not use that number for anything.  It tells us that you have a "Classic-side" car body (like an original 356) and that it was the 11XX order taken for that model by CMC.  That's all.   As an example, here is my CMC plate, telling us that I have a "Speedster Californian" which has wider fenders than your car:

If you want to see the original VW VIN, then look on top of the center tunnel right behind the seats.  Lift up the carpet and the car's VIN should be stamped permanently into the top of the tunnel, but it may be hard to read because of age.  Use some light sand paper to make the numbers stand out.

I hope that this helps, and have a wonderful day in France!

Bonjour!  (4 years of French and that the best I can do - merci mon dieu!)

Gordon - his appears to be a C (Calif flared fender model) - even though the COO # doesn't start with a SC.  The gold label says California at the top (my classic body doesn't have that on label but the COO 3 stats with S - and no C). I've seen some stamped DELUXE in the model area.  I was told that that means the doors (and sub-frame) came mounted to the body but mine came with doors mounted and that area isn't stamped.

Mine came with reams of computer 1403 print out pages (has the roller perfs on either side too) with all the parts listed - numerous saying BACKORDERED.  The "serial' is also listed there as the order #.  As you can see - the COO looks like a US car title but is only for the body.

FL State Attorney General's office when after CMC (shut them down)and their CEO George Levin around 1991.  They used nefarious advertising (you can finish the car in 40 hours) and delivering incomplete kits (back-ordered items).  The judge ordered them to fix issues, and Auto Resolutions was formed.  It was followed by Street Beast but believe by 2008 (?) they too were gone.  Pretty much the same issues.

Did your car come with a Title of Ownership?  Most end up getting title in US by year and VIN of the VW donor car (even though it no longer looks like a VW Beetle or Ghia).  Some states allow "replica or kit car" on title.  Some states also have a special construction title.  Hopefully, you have a VW pan title that matches your VIN.
