Kit was $8k back in '90. Had acceptable gel coat colored finish - so figure cost paint is ~$1k. Does chassis have a title? If so that and trans/engine is worth ~$500. Couple folks here recently bought fixer-uppers and unfinished kits. Suspect they were in the $2-5k price range. My wife keeps telling me to sell my 20 year old (bought new Nov 89) CMC - good $12-13k invested. Seriously doubt I could get 1/2 of the "investment" - even less in crappy economy in dead of winter on east coast. Finished they seem to bring $12-16k.

Ha, if I had put $ in bank back in '89 at 3% it would be worth $22k - in mutual funds maybe $8k. But then there the hours spent in garage - priceless. Great hobby (and good camaraderie here) - don't get me wrong.
James,
If it is of benefit to you, we bought two rollers with transaxles installed, pans already shortened, etc, body on, wheels and tires to roll them around with and everything to finish the kit sans the engine itself for $6,000.

So $3k each.

If that does not benefit you, then don't mention it...

James, been there, done that divorce thing. I had my unfinished car(bunch of parts?) appraised by a certified appraiser. Mine was a rolling kit, painted no less. I had the engine but it was not installed/running. It got a value of about 9K in 2003, and that is for a Vintage Spyder. I actually invested quite a bit more than that, over 20 easily.

My ex saw dollar signs also. But honestly, all you have is a bunch of parts, and it sounds to me you are not even close to finished. As far as I know, it's not titled. And even if it is, it is not drivable or complete by any means. I mean you need paint, right? Get it appraised and hopefully, the appraiser has been through a divorce too. My ex chose not to go after my car in the end, it wasn't financially worth it for her.

Once that was behind me, I put all sorts of effort into it, and drive it often, taking my kids for rides. The car to me is a bit of liberation, especially given my situation without going into detail. I kind of turned a negative into a positive.

Appraisal isn't too expensive either. Don't give up on your dream if you don't have to. Or you could sell and start another project later, your choice.

I don't know you, your troubles, or your finances. Sometimes it can be more about what you don't say though, so don't give up on the car too easily. Consult your attorney, or better yet, it's a lot cheaper if you both don't have one! I can tell some stories here, but not on a public forum. Good luck to you.

By the way, my ex has never gotten a ride, but some of her friends have!
Could you post an add on ebay... then "reserve the right to sell it locally"....
write a really crummy add so nobody bids on the car... then "sell' it locally to a trusted friend,
or a friend of a friend. I'm sure guys will help you out... as many of us have had the wife who has dollar signs in her eyes. If it "sold" for $2000... and you split the money with her, she gets $1000 in her hand, would that be cool with her? Give your friend $2000 of your own money to give back to you. He hauls it off to storage for you.
The wives get devious... I'm tellin' you. fight fire with fire. maybe?
i may have over payed for this. i didn't do much research when i bought it. I was just looking for a cool project and i liked the fact of the fiberglass body. Doing a resto on a steel car it so time consuming and i knew i would lose intreast. I knew this wouldn't take to long for me, maybe 6 months.I can probably finish this car a get it on the street for about 3000 with paint. I'm a body man so the labor is all me, just material cost and the neccesary parts needed. So i guess i got alot to think about. I wanted to give her half of what we payed but no good. And you can't argue with this one,it just not worth the mentall stress.
Better re think the paint work price A decent job is about $2,000.oo

The Future X needs to get real and Wake up These cars are nice but Only sell good when completed..

If she is going to be that difficult just let it disappear for a while. at your brother's . And give her a present apprased value, from a body shop and watch her get steamed. when you tell her you sold it,to him, as is.. at stated value,

A judge will set her straight right quick. about realistic true value of used or unfinished goods.
i'm too nice of a guy for some reason.I get a good deal on paint supplies trough my work. If i have to finish it some ppg products are very resonable as far as clear and primers. The color it what can get expensive. i was going to do red which is really expensive but if i'm doing it to be sold maybe a solid blue.we will see.
James-

If you are determined to finish the car, I'd recommend that you not paint it blue if you want to sell it.

I'd recommend picking a period color- silver or black would be the most salable. Cream would require the least blocking to look good, and the paint won't be over the moon. There are some nice, period single-stage colors that are beautiful on these cars (stone gray springs to mind), which would add value to the car over a non-period blue.

I'd stick with an original color, if you want to get the most possible out of it.

FWIW, you seem like a nice guy (and I really respect that)- but you really do need to think hard about the wisdom of spending 100+ hours and over $1K on paint attempting to add value to a car that you are going to try to sell (at a profit... in the winter... in a down market), then split the proceeds down the middle. I have no reason to doubt your fabrication skills, but most home builders would agree that their time has been worth very little in adding value to an incomplete kit. The resale value tends to be less than the actual money paid out on parts and material. You time will likely end up being free. You could easily spend another 300 hours and $5K on your car, and have it be worth $10K. That's harsh- but it's the truth.

That being said, it would be more than fair to determine the actual market value for it (as it sits), and give her the choice of the car (as it sits) or the money. That's the nice guy solution. Legally, you don't need to complete the car to settle the division of your assets.

I'm sorry about the dissolution of your marriage. It's a far bigger deal than a plastic car. I wish you well.
Wolfgang, kindly post a link in a thread we can call "the
back porch."
that's where we'd gather to shoot the breeze, anyway.
He'll, I'll go start the thread in General, so we can
post pictures.

James, you could sell the car for a dollar to any one of us, then buy it back after the Big D is over. It's only major property if its value is over $10K or so.
Good question for a lawyer, but you should be able to part with auto parts easily enough.
My two cents.
