I haven't started the Speedster in two weeks so late on Sat. afternoon I tried to start it. The last few times I started it it would turn over once or twice then fire right up. Sat. I turned it over about half a dozen times...seemed it just wasn't getting spark, it didn't cough or stumble, just nothing. Asked my wife to come out and I had her turn it over while I checked the coil wire. Very, very weak yellow spark, Ohmed out a nearly 5.2ohms, If I remember correctly the ideal ohm range for a coil is in the 3-4 ohm range and the coil was getting very hot, almost to the point it was too hot to touch. So, I concluded the coil was bad...no big deal, right...

Sunday at church my young 16 year old nephew asked me if he could come over and help me on the car. Since Nicky was about 13 he has always wanted to help me and I've taught him quite a bit about cars in general. Nick's dad, my brother has the mechanical aptitude of a door knob...I think he's lucky to even know where the fuel filler is...lol. So since Nicky is a good kid, fun to have around and is getting pretty adept with mechanics I told him sure come on over.

He gave me a hand to test fit the top, something I had been wanting to do for awhile and he helped me change the plugs in the '55(He actually did all the work I just 'supervised).

I told Nick I was going to have to pull the coil on the Speedster so I could take it to try and find a new one. I then got a phone call from a friend who wanted some information I had on my computer. Told Nick I'd be back out in a couple minutes and went into the house.

Nick, bless him, took it on his own to pull the coil for me...I came out of the house and there he sits proud as get out with the coil on the workbench...the problem is he never noted where the wires went. I'm not used to a coil having more than 3 wires attached, one from ignition, 2 from distributor(1 red, 1 black usually) to it unless running an electric tach which adds one more.

I found the ignition wire easily enough and the dist. wires, yet I have 3 others coming out of a loom, 1 red, 1 light olive green, 1 black that were connected to the coil...where do they go the black on the 1 terminal? the red and green on the 15 terminal?

Type of Bosch coil I have now is a 0221119027 w/ terminal connectors.

One other question I have is this coil compatible with running either a Pertronix or Compufire module in lieu of points? Or would I need something like a Bosch Blue US Version 00-012US?

Standard VW coil wiring is:

15+: from switched power (ignition)

15+: power for carb choke and idle cutoff valve

15+: power for reverse lights (goes through an inline fuse to the switch on the trans)

1-: from points

The only thing that should be on Terminal 1 would be points (and a wire to the tach if you've got one). But since your wire colors are nonstandard, I don't know what each of them are.

The only concern with a coil for an electronic module is whether or not it's going to require a ballast resistor. A 3 ohm coil won't need one.
