Cold starting

Someone recently told me not to idle the engine after starting from cold as this increases wear due to the lower oil pressure not adequately lubricating engine parts. Is this true? Should an engine then be revved up to heat it up as quickly as possible?

The "Idiot Book" says to let it idle while you roll a joint, the VW owners manual says to try not to let an air cooled engine idle for any length of time.

What I do in any car in cold weather is start up and drive off gently so the trans can get some lubricant splashed around as well. Actually I do that when its warm out too.

TC, we need to clarify to the gentleman that first you need the OEM fan housing and thermostat/flap system installed and working. That's your best bet for a quick and safe warmup.

LOL, this was on the Samba last week and you hit the nail on the head, same type of answers. I let it run for about a minute until the car idles fine then take off. No 3 minute joint break and I don't know (well I don't) agree with the VW manual. You need to splash a little around before you take off. Sure you can idle the car up the street at 1100rpm, but I would rather sit in the driveway for a minute doing that. Seriously I just wait until the exhaust sounds right that takes about a minute.
