After nearly 8 months of following the enthusiastic posts of this site, I am elated to say Henry and his elves are building me a Speedster at IM-Vancouver!!!

I still have 30 days or so to select my colours, and am appealing to you wonderful folks to post some of your prideful JPEGS. I am sitting on the fence between Cream and Tan roof, or a Silverstone Grey and Black roof...

Any colour impression gleaned from this site and worked into my build will be worthy of a fabulous bottle of Burrowing Owl wine from beautiful British Columbia!

Thanks guys!

I think my IM Speedster looks pretty sweet, Black w/polished Fuchs, Red interior, Tan Top and Tonneaus. BUT, let me say this, if I was going at this again, I'd do the car to be a clone of Jim Ward's. His Ruby Red with a black top is stunning.

My car can be seen in the files on this site, "dale" and Jim's car is found in "dubudee'

And congratulations.
Ray,

Congrats!

I recieved your e-mail. I'll send some additional photos that I have from a recent trip to Santa Barbara with the luggage rack installed (smilar to the 2 below). Pictures of my Vintage Speedster that I owned prior to the IM, in meissen blue with black interior and top.

Ray,

I think the combo on Dale's Speedster with the addition of the over-riders makes it the most accurate replication I've seen. I would also recommend the Silver used on Brooks Waltons' and Stan Galat's IM Speedsters/ So, with my ruby that covers the basic red, black silver.

I was very close to picking a more retro color and there are three that were on my list. Stone Grey is a beautiful color that reflects in light as a taupe/light cocoa, and shows a light moss green in the shade. There are some examples of this color on IMs... I think Scott Sloan's 56 Club Racer Replica IM is probably the best to look at, by far. You can also find it on real steel on a clone GT in the 356R owners list on-line (57 ownend by Alex F.), a twin grille roadtser seen at the Camp Out, Ventura, and Dana Pt Pics, and a beautiful T-1 that John Leader has captured pics of. I love this color and it was a coin toss between it and the Ruby. Scott's interior would be my choice with Stone, but I have seen an original with the red Dale Bates used and it looks very nice. I have also seen a Roadster with a sea foam green interior with the stone and it is a very retro and classy look.

Another great color is Slate Grey. Look at John Leaders JPS GT Carerra. It is a deep thick color with a retro look. I have seen a pic of this paint on a real 57 with full trim and deep red interior, a stunning car... especially using Roadster Seats like Dale's. John uses a beautiful deep wine leather and his GT is one of the most unique and beautiful 356R cars you will ever see.

The third color can be found on Dan Palmquist's beautiful IM Roadtser (Vert D). It is a creamy yellow (Dan can fill you in on the code) that was inspired by Rick Davis' ultra retro IM Speedster. That paint gives the car a retro look even as the paint is drying.

If you like blue, then the color I like the best is OZ Abregov's deep blue IM Speedster. It is a beautiful car and with the tan interior... well, it exudes class. I have seen an IM Speedster in that blue with a wine interior, blue top, 2332, 901, etc... and that car still captures my thoughts. It was delivered to a customer in the Bay area. Ask Henry. I believe Wilhoits Restorations is finishing a blue Speedster now in that 'Azure Blue'.... a very nice color.

In a black Roadtser... I would copy Bill Steele's Roadster to the T, including the interior and all options, with some Bivens wheels, or the So Cal Discs like on Scott's Speedster with Super Caps.

Henry has files of pics of many colors.... check with HR. If you can accept large files I have most of what Henry sent me on a CD.

Good Luck. And yes, I love the Ruby. I swore I would not have a red car... but the Ruby spoke to me. I have no regrets.

Interior Combos.... look at all of the cars I listed. I think Dan Millers new IM has the same colors as OZ's Speedster... a very nice car.

My last suggestion: Go to all the sites... start with the 356R and go to regional clubs, restorers, etc, and look at event pics. Send Henry pics of cars you like... and start narrowing it down from there.

Another suggestion. Wilhoits will send you color samples sprayed on a card. Stick with the original solid Porsche Colors, except Silver. If you go with Silver I would use what Brooks Walton and Stan Galat have on their beautiful IMs... it is stunning, and really pulls out the shapes of the 356 Tub Lines. That is THE Silver to use.

Jamie,

I now live in N-OKC (Edmond) and lived & worked in the DFW Metroplex for quite some time, North Hurst on the Grapevine border. My wife's cousin lives in Southlake and I have friends in the Southlake, McKinney, Bedford, and Lewisville areas. If you have time when it warms up.... maybe May, we could meet with Justin around the river or Turner Falls on I-35 for a day of fun with Speedsters. Maybe we can round up a few more, like Dan Miller, and there's a good guy in Arlington with a silver/red stripes CMC-C. Your VS is quite a nice appearing car and I look foward to seeing it. So, let's make plans.

In any case, feel free to write. I do like the potential IM color pick. (so does Dan! lol). So, put in your order with Henry when the time/month/year is right. That color is as German as it gets in it's name: Meissen Blue (1957-59) Also, if you are looking for a degree of correctness in your interior with the Meissen, then I'll send you some charts. I think an original steering wheel with the horn ring, cap, etc would be the ultimate pick with a classic Meissen Blue. I would also heavily consider the Over-Riders with that retro-classic color. It would be beautiful and would turn heads. FWIW Info: At the Gulf Coast 356 Holiday held in the hill country last April, there was a Meissen Blue Speedster shown. I have pics if you are seeking Reference Photos.

You asked about the Hellas? They are big-A honkers and at first I was concerned that they would not make the "fit" or look.... but after Henry dropped them on some reversed NLA bumper mounts they seemed to make the look. They are 6 1/2" Diameter and probably about 4" from Grilles to the back. They were a gift from an SOC member, the late Grorge Brown. I've looked on E-bay and a set with Grilles starts around $700 (up). With some searching by scroungers like Paul Harford you could find some cheaper and have them refinished.

Ray,

Some real steel cars. Check the SOC for IMs, and JLs JPS.

If I was doing it again, I would be tempted to replicate the famous Excellence Featured/Dana Point Winner 56 GT Black on Black... with IM I would go with a 2332 and Berg 5spd or a T4 with a stout 4 speed. Replicate it down to the satin Bivens with the long studs.... this is the GT. John Leaders is very close, in Slate. I might do it in Ruby.

Azure Blue. This is what Oz and Bob Miller have.... very nice. Look at this combo on a 58 Speedster

There are other combos I like but I don't have them loaded on this laptop. These are just links from Wilhoit and the 356R.

Jim,

Just let me know when, I would love to get together. I just put in a new Empi shifter... wow, I can't believe the difference over that stock VW unit. It's like driving a new car. My wife even drove it yesterday and loved it, and she couldn't even get it in reverse last time she tried to back it out of the garage. I was wondering what does IM use for shifters?

Now, I just need to find a white ball to put on it instead of the black one it came with.

Dear Jim,

Your detailed response certainly is appreciated (and captures the very cool enthusiasm that all the members on this site exhibit)...

I, too, like the slate grey - and have fallen in huge like for Dan P's cream and tan combination (as Dan will attest...he has been assisting me in this process for a while now!)

I will review and click to my heart's content on your attachments...thx for taking the time Jim.

Happy New Year!

Ray
Ooooooh
You just made my world so beautifully tough! Does everyone go through 'color angst' like me at this stage?!

I love the Silver from your first link (do you know what specific colour this is? http://www.willhoitautorestoration.com/images/4sale/Sp22.jpg

The aquamarine blue is also beautiful with the red accent colour...
and then you have Dan P's fabulously rich cream and tan...

This is like being at the Ben and Jerry ice cream freezer...

Thanks again...'still Sleepless North of Seattle, but very appreciative for all your input...!

Happy New Year...and here's an open invite to drive the scenic Whistler highway before 2010!

Cheers,
Ray
Ray, there are very good odds we wil be up there in late summer. Have you taken the loop from 1 east to Hope, go north on the old trans-can 12, cross back west somewhere about 60kms above Pemberton and then go back to YVR?

The best silver is very close to that..... Check Brooks Walton and Stan Galat's files. Henry knows the paint code.

Hi Jim,

A fabulous drive...you must give me a ring. We are returning from a home exchange in France mid-August, but would love to do the trip.

My email is Ray_matthews@telus.net - so let me know when you think you might be up this way...'love to show you some down-home B.C. hospitality...!

Thanks again for all your kind links...I know this took some time.

:) rem
Ray,

The only recommendation I would make regarding color choices is that the lighter the color, the less the inevitable rockchips will show. I generally have the bra on the front for the highway trips and still have managed to pick-up some noticable chips. With the way one body panes blends into another with out fender seams, having the damaged areas resprayed is difficult to have done without their being evidence of a blend in the paint finishes/surfaces. I have had black cars for nearly 20 years and do miss the presence that a recently detailed dark car provides, however, my obsession with having the cars appear as new all of the time has driven my preference to the lighter colors as they are much easier to hide the fine scratches and chips culminating from normal driving and wear and tear.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND A YELLOWISH BEIGE. THIS COLOR WAS AVAILABLE FROM CMC SPEEDSTER A FEW YEARS AGO....I ALSO SUGGEST A VYNL CALLED ESTRICH IN PEANUT COLOR. THIS PRODUCT IS AVAILBLE FROM"yourautotrim.com"
1-888-212-8630 ask for Jason.....THE VYNL WILL CHANGE YOUR HEAD TURNER INTO A SHOW STOPPER.
Hey Ed and Wayne,

Thank you for sharing your prefered colour palate for my IM build!

I am heading over to Henry's this am to look at 2 IM's in silver/grey and one other 'creamy' colour to take some JPEGS...

'Done to a week to make my decision. This is tougher than dating.

Thanks for all your input gang.

:O) Ray
