"comfort" seats

Talk to Carey about some Roadster/Cabriolet seats. I know he's worked with them before.

Carey is certainly an alternative, but what you're proposing to do with a pair of VW seats should work just as well.  The VW and older Porsche seats were pretty close, although the 356 seats were a bit more "sculptered" to fit the body better - pretty much what happened to the VW seats by nature after they had been used for a few years.  I think "Old Yeller" on here did something similar on his car as well.  

If you work with an auto upholsterer while you're re-working the VW seats to get the dimensions right I would think the 356 covers should fit nicely.

If you use VW seats, you'll need to lower them several inches or you'll be catching bugs with your teeth above the windshield.

Seats out of early 911/912 (or late 356) with the chrome side back adjustments would give better back adjustment than the VW ones. They are too wide unfortunately for pan based cars.

Those would fit in a Beck, but you might have to re-position the seat rails.

I'm interested in what you find, too. I've heard of people taking late 70's early 80's "leather" Toyota seats and putting them in their cars.

I'm not willing to shell out too much $$ for seats, but am always watchign the Craigs and Ebay auctions to find something that may work.

Another thing I'm looking into are adjustable rails, ... If anyone has any thoughts about that or can point me to a post I can read up on, that would be great.

When we bought our Speedster 11 years ago, my wife couldn't drive it without tossing a few folded towels on the seat to get her up high enough to be able to see well enough to drive. I ended up buying an electric seat motor with frame and controller from an older car and adapted it to the bottom of the driver seat.

The scissor part of the frame allows the seat to sit just as low as the passenger seat and the seat moves forward, back, up, down and also tilts so it's easy for her to adjust and drive now and we no longer have to carry around a bunch of towels with us.

Hot rod or dune buggy poly seat tracks were used by CMC/FF on their cars --- and others too. Do a search for EMPI Universal seat sliders - about $25 a pair (one seat).

Have a set of those sliders out in the shop. Not too bad.

hang around here.  My wife could not fit in teh speedster seats and I saw a post for a pair of wider, cushier seats that came out of a VS.  I paid a very fair price for them and they were like new.  ALso watch on Samba.

One thing to NOTE is a pan based car has less room for the seat at the fork Y it wont fit I had to make a pair of seats

I just made a deal for some 356 seats. They'll be going in a future Beck. Even if not, I can restore them and maybe make a few pennies off of them.

I bought the slide rails, a single side to test, and it works perfectly! Well, I had to do some adjustments, but it works as I expected.


Also, I've been looking at comfortable seats, too. Found the following I liked, but not too sure of the dimensions.

The Scat seats are nice. The smittybilt 44801 look too upright for a low slung car. You want the seats to lean back a little for better ergonomics.

Watch the seat base width, it should not exceed 17" for a pan based speedster.

I'll be putting them in a future Beck. Still considering selling my FiberFab.

If I can narrow a Honda Accord  seats you should be able to do something similar to yours if you hit the rear Y of the tunnel.

I've been looking for some Honda Accord seats, I heard they work great! If anyone has any suggestions for where to reliably look, I'd appreciate it.

Just cut the Y out and refab the tunnel. Did some of that on my Manx.
