So I'm new here, and very close to purchasing a kit 550 to build. I don't have the time or expertise to start from scratch so currently the Thunder Ranch stage 3 is looking good because a lot of the work is done. If anyone has any recomendations against this kit or for another one (I see a lot of people here have Vintage 550s but so far they look a bit more expensive in order to get to the same stage as the TR stage 3) that would be GREAT! But my bigger question at this point - very early in the game but vain as I am - is color. I saw that other people have posted about this question too but mine is farther out of the spectrum so help me if you will. I'm a young guy - 27, never have had a "cool" car in my life and want to build the porsche my Grandpa never had. He bought a 356 and two 911's through his life - all 3 imported from Germany because he had to have a custom color, which was a wierd yellow. I unfortunately don't have a picture but my Grandma remembers it for me as a light creamy yellow. In any case, I'm thinking of painting the 550 in a cobra fashion - meaning with racing stripes down the middle in either a brilliant orange pearl or perhaps a dark maroon pearl both with cream stripes. OK, let the flaming begin!! :) I love the silver color of the 550's that most people get, but I saw a picture of a cobra by Shell Valley in the May issue of Kit Car and it looks awesome in orange! Well, let me know if I'm being a huge moron and if so hopefully you'll all still have a shred of respect left enough to give me advice on building it when I have troubles!
Also, if anyone here is from western washington or nearby and owns a spyder please let me know if I can come by and look at it, I've not yet been able to get near one and before I buy I'd like to see if I fit. I'm 6' and about 175 lbs. thanks for having this site, it's already helped so much.

The nice thing about these cars is that you can set it up the way YOU want it. Some folks go with the Silver color to maintain the image. Others go with silver because the car cries for the silver color. However, there are other colors out there that look just as good as the silver. You should work out the Spyder that is you. I would suggest that you look for a used Spyder if you can swing it. It will save you a lot of work and speed the process for you. If not, the two Spyder sites are full of helpful folks that don't really care what color the car is. We will help if we can.

Right now my Spyder is black, and I am looking to change it to a pewter color.
