i actually found a better way to mount the hinges. i took a bunch of photos (but left the memory card at home).
it allows the latch to sug right up to the window, is a bit higher (which allows for easier/more latch adjustment and doesn't make the latch hang down so much in your line of sight if you're tall like me), and doesn't stick out so prominently.
essentially, it's the same as Gordon's, but it's at a 45 degree angle toward the top. I bored out the hinge mounting holes and used bigger stainless hardware and nylock nuts as these are no longer under the weather stripping.
Thanks again Gordon. The "build manual" is super sketchy in this department. Their drawings are poor and description is even worse.
