I have installed a Tri-Mill on the 78 IM..and runs great, sounds great and overheats great..so I welded up the the stock cooling shround snorkel hose plenums and now have fan air thru the heater boxes..huge pain in the $%$##** and @#$##!!!...however..the center lower tin plate (the one that runs under the crank pulley)..is not going to fit around the new hose positions..I have it removed..and cant imagine it affecting the coolin much..if anyone has any thoughts regarding this...

These cars are more prone to overheating than stock VW cars due to the diminished intake area for cool air. I suggest you try to put all the tins in place and try to at least seal off well the rear of the engine/car because that's where hot air expelled from the engine can be sucked back and recirculated.
