I read a story on the internet(but I can't seem to find it now) about a guy that bought up thousands of sets of super cool tin from VW. He went on a marketing mission and was successful in making everyone believe that they needed super cool tin. Needless to say, he made a fortune.
I understand those were originally designed for Type III motors which are the same as a Type I but with a diferent fan configuration called "pancake". The regular Type I tins are more than adequate for Type I cars provided they have all the other factory tins in place as designed.
Ricardo, you're correct, it was made for the Type 3 engine (Fastback and Squareback) Personally, I haven't seen any difference in head temperatures using cool tin or the Type 1, flat lower tin piece that goes between the cylinders barrels.
Everyone now believes that they need "cool tin" and virtually every engine that's built has them installed
