But, I'd love a sixth gear
I've always thought that a 2 liter (or larger) with power to about 6,000rpm is the perfect engine for a lot of guys in these cars; gobs of low end and midrange, enough top end to have great fun with and (if built right) you can beat on it all day and it'll last forever. I've got a 3.78/2.25 mainshaft (and matching gears; bought them from Berg as a closeout) for mine, and since I'm going to be taking it apart soon I've been toying with changing the 3rd-4th-5'th gearing (1.58, 1.21, .82). I haven't run it yet so I can't comment on the spacing. And yeah, a 6th gear would be neat, but just think of the trouble you'd get into, and nobody makes tires in our sizes to go that fast...

It's so sweet, it makes me wonder why I'm doing all this stuff with the "real" engine. If anybody wants the perfect engine, there it is: 2110, W120, Dellorto 40s, 1-1/2" sidewinder. I've got a .93/3.44, which is just slightly longer than a .89/3.88. I'm happy as a lark cruising anywhere I want to go between 70 and 80 MPH. Sustained cruise above 85- 90 MPH puts it over 4K, where it isn't as happy.
You're doing it because you see the possibilities..
