anyone know who makes new reproduction coupe/roadster seats? I'd like to put a set in my envemo which currently has very 1980's recaro sport seats. I would like something like what the intermeccanica roadsters have. I have looked at some used original porsche seats but they all need tons of work and would cost a fortune to restore. Was considering buying the SCAT low back seats and having them upholstered with the correct porsche pattern. Anyone have these scat seats? Paul

Paul,

The seats are complete taken out of a car. They are out of a 63 so they are 46 years old. The chrome is OK for a "driver" but should be re-chromed to look nice. As for the foam and horsehair I would suspect it all need to be replaced. The value is in the seat hinges, pans and back frames not the padding.......;-)

Dave.
Dale, pan/chassis is from a VW brasilia...it looks basically the same as a beetle...also shortened to the porsche wheelbase. You guys both have intermeccanicas...I've chatted with Henry and am considering buying a set of his roadster seats they are a bit pricey. Was looking to weigh my options. Do you like your roadster seats? Paul
Barry,
you make reproduction seats? are the ones in your photos reproductions? They look great. looking at the cost...a clapped out set of originals for say $400 is still going to cost a lot. new foam is $200 per seat and autos international covers in vinyl is another $200 per seat. plus a rechrome of the hinges is another $200 for both. so we are looking at $1400 total not counting shipping. I was hoping to do something for under $1000. Paul
Look at junk yard MAZDA Miata MX5 seats - several have them and reupholstered they look correct and are reportedly comfortable. I'd remove the head rest though. There are some pictures on SOC cars - search here on "Miata seats".

New junk yard Recaro seats from a BMW or VW might work too. They don't have the over stuffed bolsters like the current ones you have. Some are actually leather and can be sourced for around $300.
I made mine out of 1984 Honda Civic seats for the D. They were severely modified. But I have had some new idea's since then. for a refined version that can use the factory foam replacements and new factory replacement seat covers..

Even then I can't beat that.. The covers and foam cost a mint..
Barry,
you gave me a couple of ideas...first, consider refoaming my recaro's with the 356 original foams. The frame dimensions are close and I know that they fit into my pan. 2) cut down the seat backs on an old set of porsche 924 seats I have and use the 356 seat back foam...these seats are recaro also and the seat bottoms are nearly identical. will have to verify that they will fit. Question, Did you consider using Ghia seats from say a 1969 model in your build? Paul
I've looked at ghia seats and it doesn't look like they have the raised mount/sliders the way the beetle does. I wasn't aware that on the speedsters the seats are not bolted directly to the vw floor pan. On my Envemo the seats are bolted directly to floor pan mounted sliders.
