OK - here's the deal. I took my car to an upholstery shop to have the header bow attached to the top. I picked it up today and didn't notice until I got home that there was a crack in the windshield running right down the middle of the windshield from the top side downward. Could this be caused from the top being too tight? I was under the impression the windshield "floats" in the frame so the top would be pulling the frame and shouldn't put undue pressure on the glass - correct? I just want to be sure before I call this guy. My thoughts are - either it's too tight and has to be redone or one of his guys pulled or leaned on the windshield during work and caused the crack. I am concerned if it's the top then it'll happen again with a new piece of glass. Any info or thoughts would be a great help. Thanks, Mickey

Sorry to hear about the problem you've had.

I think the idea of a hood being tightened down and cracking the screen is very unlikely.

From everything I've heard, a screen is typically cracked from being tightened down too much.

I suspect you're in the difficult situation of deciding what is who's fault - I dout very much it's down to the hood being too tight, I'd check out more on how the screen is fitted.

If they cracked the screen by other means, is anyone's guess. It's not likely to be due to someone leaning on it though, more some other cause.
Mickey,
I have done quite a number of installs on project speedsters, yes, the windshield some what floats but also is secured by the center post and the two windshield posts.
When assembling a top,if done incorrectly can cause too much tension by shorting the material at the forward bow, this can cause the windshield to lift away from the windshield base moulding and tilt rearward, which very well can cause stress on the windshield , Never hurts to take the car back and show them what you believe happened at their facility, proving it can be iffy....
Thanks Jon and Alan - I talked to John at JPS just a bit ago in reference to ordering a new windshield and what he thought may hvae caused this. He said it's likely due to the center post being too tight. So possibly the windsheild was pulled against it when the topped was tightened? I'm going to order a new windshield tomorrow but I'm VERY nervous about the install! What is the best way to go about avoiding the whole "too tight vs. too loose" issue on teh new install? Thanks, Mickey
Mickey, I feel your pain. I was sick when we put my new plexiglass one in and it snapped on the last rivet.
I think you'll have an easier time of it with the upholsterer if you get a measurement from someone here on where the snap fasteners should be in relation to the lip of the back seat, and then ask for a measurement of where yours are.
Did you supply the top, and if so, were the snaps in it already? What are the variables between what you have and what you had, and does anybody else have the same roof?
If the top gave you problems now, it'll be worse as winter approaches. Mine used to shrink about an eighth of an inch in winter weather, and my snap-anchors began to crack the fiberglass around the rear of the back seat. I had to re-glass the entire rear deck lip because the gelcoat got so dorked up.
