A short time ago while driving thru South Lake Tahoe with Terry Nuckels, I heard a rumbling, growling sound coming from the alternator. I interpreted the noise to be failing bearings in the alternator.

A couple of weeks ago I pulled the alternator/fan and took it to the shop to have the fan removed and put on a new alternator. The mechanic brought out the fan and told me the fan was cracked and that I needed another one. I thought he was just trying to make an extra 150 bucks and asked to see the crack. The alternator bearings were fine and these are the pictures I took of the fan center when I got home. Sure glad there was a large washer under the fan nut!

This is the original welded/balanced fan that CB installed on my original engine back in 2001. The fan has 42,000 miles on it.

The second, dark shot, is looking at the sun showing the crack thru the fan. I got lucky on this one. A new welded, balanced fan has been installed.
