I'm told not to worry about 3200 rpm at 65-70 mph (freeway speed) with the stock VW 1600cc and 4:12 tranny. So long as you don't overheat, is this opinion shared by most? I understand it's a boxer engine with a short stroke but sure seems noisy. Can you tell it's my first v-dub?

Just cruised from Quebec to Montrea about 3 hours each way at exactly that RPM. If the oil is clean you have nothing to worry about. The car seems to run best righ around 3200. It humms, a little over and you can hear it work. Great to pass and then get back to 3000-3300.....Had a great drive. Except for a wire coming off the coil and it stalled. I found it though and kept on truckin'.

Keep the oil fresh and the air circulating and you got nothing to worry about. I remarked to the wife how the engine purred at around 3000. Like this is where there is less strain.

I used to own and old Triumph S*ITFIRE and learned that each car has a sound you need to hear, learn and understand. Mine humms around 3000 rpm to 3150. At 3200 the exhaust starts to BARK. That's where I hear the motor is working therefore putting on some torque.
