Gary Berg finished my Berg 5 so I called a buddy of mine to see if he was interested in a road trip. Rob and I took off at 5 am Wednesday and were at Gary's shop at noon. We had a great visit with Gary but couldn't take up to much of his time as he had 3 more 5 speeds in various stages of construction. We decided to run up to North Hollywood to JPS. John was very gracious but I would suggest calling first  JPS was a much bigger operation than I envisioned. 5 cars finished and 5 or 6 more under construction, very impressive. John took Rob for a ride in a Subbie powered coupe and brought him back with stars in his eyes (I think he might buy one).

We grabbed a room in Covina and had great Mexican and a couple cool ones. Than I called Kevin at Mendiolla to see if we could visit the next day, he said sure anytime. So the next morning we headed to San Diego. Mendiolla's shop was very impressive and Kevin took a couple of hours showing us around and BSing. Grabbed lunch and headed back to Phoenix. Oh and thanks for the tee shirts Kevin.

A great couple of days but my God how do you southern Cali guys deal with that traffic.

Sounds like a great trip.

I was there in May with my son and we had a look at a few Speedsters in yards and headed down to San Diego to check out a dealer there that advertisers lots of Speedsters - waste of a drive as the shop is a workshop with a number of partially completed Speedsters and rather doubtful sales staff..

the highlight was cars and coffee in Irvine that attracts hundreds of cars and an opportunity to catch up with the Speedster gang who met us there.

Its always good to do a garage run..

Wish we knew about some of the shops you visited - maybe next time! Thanks for the leads.

The car we had attracted lots of attention - Sausalito at the Golden Gate viewing area..

Hey Bernie,

I haven't been to southern California in a while, in the 80's and 90's my job had me there for half my life. I really enjoyed myself. It's not like it's a long way, I can be looking at the Pacific ocean in 7 1/2 hours from Phoenix. I'm going to start going with Rob who runs out there 4 or 5 times a year for swap meets.

Next time plan your trip. JPS and Mendeolla were both really cool.

Curt in Arizona...

No denying the crazy traffic, but you'll find that kind of traffic in most any metropolitan area. The trade-off for me is living in a temperate climate to enjoy the outdoors year-round, access mountains & skiing 2 hours away, access to desert for 4x4 & camping 2 hours away, access to coast & surfing/sailing 10 minutes away, driving my Speedster as daily commuter!

Glad you had a nice visit to SoCal. Give a shout next time you're in the neighborhood and we'll scare up a few SOCers and go for a cruise!

Hey Bernie,

But it's a dry heat, I call it 3 month's of hell and 9 month's of paradise  Every place you live there are trade offs. I moved to Phoenix (actually Mesa) in 1977 when it really was paradise. I still like it but too many people found out about it. Same thing happened to LA a couple of decades earlier. Bernie, being from down under would happen to know "Mustang Mark Dixon" ?

Hey Jim,

I sure will take you up on that offer. From the vids you posted, it looks like a lot of fun...

Curt, desert fox...

I live about 75 miles north of NYC. People have been moving north for years, but the biggest influx came after 9/11/01. It was a tidal wave, building of homes went up, population went up, schools were forced to add space, etc. Then the bottom fell out of the real estate market as a bunch of variable rate mortgages got people in hock, FAST!

The influx will still continue but at a much slower rate. It is what it is, and I'm used to it.

We have mountains, rivers, killer roads, and in less than 2 hours, I can be in Manhattan. Yes, taxes suck but I love where I live!
