Since Henry built the car, Ive been through a number of cv boots. I have a home lift, so Im always under the car checking. Henry is working on a solution, by the way. The angle of the drives shafts is about 20 degrees or so. Ive tried different boots, and after a long trip, I always check for failure. So far I havent done any damage. My Porsche tuner just smiles, loves the car and .......my wallet!
Howard, Can you post a photo of it setup in the car. I want to see where they are ripping and what’s around them. I have the 901 transaxle with the engine moved forward so my angle is pretty extreme as well. I’m using the larger 930 CV joints and black boots from Mckenzies performance http://www.mckenzies.com/ . On the inside next to the trans I’m using the large boot (LG 930/934 boot MRB-86-9301). On the outside I had to switch to the narrow boot(small 930 boot RPB-1000) as the large was rubbing the shock(I’m running bug IRS). I will pull a wheel and take a photo latter today. For what it's worth my exhaust runs right next to one of the outter boots and the heat has not been a problem.
Heres the photo. Guess I realy should clean under the car after a 900 mile drive...
Notce the outside boot is narrow/tappered. Orginaly it was the same as the inside and rubbing aganst the shock. Also that boot is plenty close to the exhaust but I havent ahnd any issues.
I had forgotten that I changed the top mounts for my shocks as they appeared to be rubbing also. I made up a bracket that moved the mounts about an inch or maybe more. Can recall it it was forward or back. It brought the shock away from the boot. Looked to me that mine was rubbing when the suspension was compressed.
