New problems keep popping up on this IM. I noticed the other day that the cv joint boot is torn and all the grease flew everywhere. I have an IM with IRS, type 1 engine and standard bug transmission. Is the standard empi boot replacement what I should replace it with or is there a new improved option I should look at? Thanks

My IM6 probably has more of an angle than does yours. Henry has supplied me with some off road extreme angle CV boots, but I have not installed them as yet.
You might want to look in that direction.
Just be cautious - off road VWs often use larger diameter VW T2 or Porsche 930 CVC joints - those boots won't work. I suspect there are heavier duty T1 boots out there - they would most likely have more accordion folds for more articulation. For $10 each I'd just replace all the CVC joints with new EMPI ones and keep an eye out for repairs.
Never heard of Type I IM having an issue with CV joint boots... just saying. It must be age
I'd think a pan based IM would be std T1 CVC. I once used Made in India ones and they rotted within 3 years just sitting in the garage. I thought it was just in later IMs where they moved the trans forward a bit --- like Phil's VW/Audi water cooled IM.
It isn't difficult to replace boots - but very messy and you need to clean out old black grease and grit. New axles are alternative at $80 each. If you disassemble be sure the cages/bearings are put back so they don't bind - easy to do wrong but easy to catch and redo.
Ya I don't see too many options in terms of a high quality rubber. Just wanted to double check before I bought the empi kits.
Yeah that is why we are going back to using lambskin.
I've got a Type 1 IM, and mine tore after 10 years or so. The angle isn't as steep as an IM6, but it's still steeper than stock, and it puts more strain on the boots and joints that a standard IRS rear end.
Under no circumstances would I follow Wolfgang's advice to buy new EMPI CV joints. Henry uses German (Lobro) joints, which are an order of magnitude better than the Chinese garbage EMPI is using. Converting to type 2 or 930 joints and boots is a LOT of money, if you use quality parts. I'm not sure it's worth it.
When I replaced my boots, I put on an off-road EMPI part. I'm not sure if it's better, but if they last 10 years, I'm good with that. I also replaced my stock drive-shafts with Sway-a-Way parts. I don't think I'd do that again, as the stock parts are fine.
Your talking about this? It says it's for a type 2 100mm off-road. Looks like it will not work with type 1. I dont see a type 1 off road style. If the stock type 1 style lasts 5 years that would be great but I have read some people have issues earlier.

The flange is for Type 2. Won't work.
Here's the kit you'd need to go to larger, heavy duty T2 bus (or Porsche 930 is same price) axles and CV joints. $839 but looks to be bolt on. Bring on the HP!
What's a CV joint? LOL
Don't Bogart that joint!
Type 2 Stub Axle Kits for Type 1 Transmission
Come with the following;
2 Forged Chromoly conversion stub axles T-1 - T-2 CV s
2 Forged Chromoly Trans Drive flanges for T-2 CV s- T-1 Trans
2 Chromoly Drive Axles
4 Bus CV Joints
4 Off-Road Boots with Boot flanges
24 Hardened CV Bolts.
My boots are urethane instead of rubber. They were colored but that has faded. I don't know if they are still available.
I remember the colored ones - red, blue or yellow. I only see them for the split axle now! They must have been TOO durable so they no longer make them.
Spend $50 bucks on new boots or $850 on a type 2 upgrade. I guess that's the madness you guys always talk about. I'm going to keep it simple.
Since you have an IRS rear and as much as I might recommend against EMPI boots for an IM application, you might try calling the guys at Raxles down in Florida to see if they have just a set of boots to fit a Type 1 VW and the price. They built my current pair of axles so I know they at least had them back then (2010). Mine are black, rubbery-feeling, not red urethane and they supposedly supply a LOT of racing axles. Their on-line product list is un-useable so give them a call and see what they can do.

Plus, doing it your way, you will have German CV joints instead of parts made in some mud hut in east Asia.
LoL all things are now made in China with a USA company label
Does the US company name make you feel more comfortable ?
My local shop had some boots that were made from Meyle that are German. Cleaning and putting it back together was pretty straight forward. Thank you for all the help.
