Toying around with the idea of a speedster as a second car. I am in sales right now and drive to 35 miles each way, a day to Ocean City Maryland for work I have a 96 vw Jetta gls with 170,000 miles on it which runs great!! I have always loved the look of the Speedster and want to purchase one to use for work on those beautiful spring and fall days. Can anone tell me if it is practical to drive one of thease daily for work? I would problay split my time between the two cars evenly...Do Speedsters get good gas miliage?

I currently use my speedster as my daily driver. I have owned my speedster since May and it is the only car I own. I drive it to work daily rain or shine and love every minute of it. I currently have 4000+ miles on it and average about 22 miles per gallon. My trip to work is only about a 15 minute drive but I do a lot of driving after work and I rack up the miles pretty quickly. I have A/C in my car which is really a necessity on a hot day if you need to drive with the top up and windows in. The A/C keeps the cabin really cool although it does make getting to some of the spark plugs difficult. I haven't had my car for nearly as long as some of the other members of this site, but I can vouch for the fact that I have used it as a very reliable daily driver for the past five months with no big problems. These cars will leak. I've used expanding foam sealant with great success (especially in the rear wheel wells) and have fixed about 80% of the leaks. Here in Miami, the weatherproofing is put to the test. And in my opinion, it has held up. I hope my experiences can help you make a decision. Please feel free to contact me with any other questions.
Hello Justin, I have been looking for a Speedster myself for the past 8 months.. And I gotta tell ya, that what I have learned here is very valuable for my desicion process. I know what I want from what type of engine, to the type of seats I would perfer... When you ask is a Speedie a good daily driver you have to look into how it will effect YOU and YOUR drive, everyones drive will be different. For example my daily drive consist of side streets and about a total of 15 miles to work and back from school for the boys. I have learned that from a basic model that if you get a bigger more powerful engine you can expect to work on that engine more often. So if you want all the bells and whistles you better be ready to shine and polish all of them too! LOL... The great thing is that you fell in love with a sweet looking car that all of us here love. So any info from these guys is golden for me! Just keep asking and ye shall receive!

Good Luck,

Dave G.
Soon to be a Speedie owner
if you are goin to drive it on a dailey basis can i suggest a good alarm system, one that has a motion sencer in the cockpit because when you park it you sometimes dont have a lot of time to put the top on it. my speedster has a viper alarm on it so when you have it activated and the top is down if someone were to reach into it the alarm sounds............Roger
