Dallas, TX -- Plano actually

anyone know where you can get a speedster replica serviced and worked on???

last time I rusty wallace vw wouldn't touch it.. so I took it to park place porsche.. they treated me like a king.. but charged me $400+ for $12 worth of parts on a minor tune up..


i'm needed the clutch worked on .. as i can't seem to go from third to second without double clutching it..

I'm sure someone can help you here with a local mech. but have you checked

Definitely take it to a VW service place; it's pretty similar to but NOT a Porsche and you shouldn't be paying Porsche service rates.

Greg, Try "The Bug Stop" in Arlington. 3622 Graves Arlington TX. 76013. 817-274-7890. The have a full machine shop, Dyno, they a part warehouse and work on VWs day in and day out. They are very helpful and love these cars!!

Sounds like you may have a syncro going bad...

There is a place in Mesquite called Plugs and Pistons or Pistons and Plugs, not sure which. I haven't used them but have been told they do good work.

I'm in Sachse. It's starting to sound like there several us in the Dallas area. We should get together sometime, maybe at one of the little local car shows on a Sunday afternoon.

How about the clutch cable...is it properly adjusted? Maybe you only need to get under the rear drivers wheel and adjust the cable for less slack.

Do they have any dune buggy stores, shops, garages, or clubs in Plano? Those guys know all about VW requirements. And most of them know how to do it for a reasonable cost, cause that is the basis of their customer demographics. Where the heck is Plano, Texas anyway?

Plano is north of Dallas, just look for big hair and the Big mall just after Texas Instruments on 75 north. If you hit McKinney, you gone to far. It is a affluent sub of Dallas.

There is a group called Dallas AirCoolers. They meet the third Friday of every month. They are definatley VW oriented, but always embrace me. Write if you want to coordinate.

that little clutch adjustment didn't seem to help. but i'm going to schedule a time to drop it off and let him work on it..

It was nice Greg. Good photo. Who would have thought, three speedsters out at a beetle barn in deep rural Collin County, Texas. As you can tell, Billy really does know aircooled, and he is so reasonable.

I heard somewhere that Houston is closer to Chicago than it was to El Paso. Interesting place, that Texas.

Houston to Chicago is 1090 miles
Houston to El Paso is 745 miles

Check the pedal assembly, I had the same problem and the clutch adjustment didn't work.

yeah.. he is supposed to work on my peddal assembly this weekend as there is some side to side play that he showed me..

planning on dropping it off friday night and letting him do a tuneup and fix the clutch issue...

That would be Texarkana, TX to Chicago, IL is closer than to El Paso, TX...

Jack, I apreciate the offer but I am not looking for a flare side. I am however looking for a silver, but would settle for any color for the right car that was close. I could very easily buy one, but would have to go cross country to get it. Then, I would have to just hope the seller was being completely honest with me. I do appreciate any advice you guys may have for me on this future purchase.

I also drive a Land Rover and I am an active memeber of Texas Rovers. We take them off road about once a month, but more importantly I can get help with any problem from the members just from using the forum on the site. If this site is anything like our Rover site, I have come to the right place!

Jim, nice classic! I have a '99 Disco II that I take out (it has LT 230 transfer case with a fabed lever to engage it). You guys are hard core. I love the pic on the website of the classic jumping the dunes! You guys have a very nice site. Lots of D-90s in the group too. I hated to see the one rolled over, but we have all had our share of bumps and scrapes. Check us out at www.texasrovers.org.

As far as a speedster. I know I will have to be patient. The right one will come along! In the meantime, I will keep hanging out on the site to gather as much info as I can until the day comes that I make the big purchase...

Dang, David, with those relative distances (miles) it really puts in perspective how ginormous Texas is. Don't mess with Texas!

Gee, that means I've been half way to Houston on vacation (turned around at El Paso, just to say I was in Texas). A good friend used to be an oil field "runner" in west Texas back in the '60s. He spent all day on the road delivering oil rig parts. He told me there was, "more of nothing in west Texas than anywhere else on earth". Of course, back then, the Paris - Dakar rally had not been invented yet!

Hey Greg, Hey Jack that pic was pretty neat, 3 speedsters in front of my shop! Jack that tan one did sell but it stayed local and the new owner of it has already came by to meet/talk with me. and got a phone call from another localguy that is supposed to be bringing his out in a week or so. he asked me if I could do fiberglass work?? LOL
