I had to go into town to buy some steel and couldn't make up my mind to take the Speedster or not due to the rainy forecast. Took the Dodge Ram 4 x 4 instead. I was doing about 55 in a 50 zone two lane paved road and looked ahead to an older Taurus coming at me over a highway overpass where he had a slight left hand curve to get to where I was. He was about 5 or 6 hundred feet away and traveling at a very high rate of speed. Maybe 80 or 90 mph. I could see his suspension lift as he drifted to his right, hit the gravel shoulder and I said to myself he's going to kill himself in the ditch. At the last moment, he corrected but out of control and veered across the center line and diagonally into my path. I don't even remember if I hit the brakes but I veered left into the oncoming lane and got around him. I figured we'd hit but it would be a glancing encounter on my right side. I got passed with only mud and rocks splashing on my right side. Looked into the mirror and saw him go down into a grassy ditch on my side and into three or four RV's at the local dealership. I looped around a short side road and came back to see his car backwards and almost under an RV. Driver's door ripped off and one leg hanging out. It's gonna be bad but it looked like a beige coloured mannequin was in the drivers seat...made no sense. Several guys from the dealership were there before me and one said the bugger's dead. Someone had called 911 and they were there in minutes. He was dead and, NAKED. On something for sure I'm thinking. The very odd thing was that his entire body was a cocoa / light grey colour in appearance. Just a strange total body colour like I've never seen before. The point is, had I taken the Speedster, not been so alert perhaps to many years of defensive motorcycle driving, I might not be writing this. I told my boys many years ago that every vehicle coming at you is a potential killer. I could have easily bit the dust today. Fran met me at the local on the way home and we shared a few with some friends while recounting the event....one said get a lottery ticket tonight. I sent Fran for it and went straight home. Be careful lads. Full moon last night. I'm still shaking a bit.

Glad you're ok.......man.....what a frightening experience!
From the thread title I thought you damn near bought another car!
Glad to hear you made it without injury..... The nerves will take time..... We've got "crazies" down here too....
Very bold move jerking to the left. Very unnerving event for sure. Glad you are here to tell us about it!
Whew! Glad you survived that harrowing incident! I'm sure that your motorcycle experience helped for sure, especially about being aware of every approaching vehicle!
Glad you're ok...
Good on ya, David. No worries, only the good die young, so we've got lots of time left.
Boy, that's scary. I'm never driving naked again.
Good for you, David and Fran We need you two around!
X2 what Rich said. Geez.
We're all a breath away. Life is a vapor, a mist in the morning-- here one minute, and gone the next. We all think that life on this blue ball goes on forever, but there's a finite number of beats in our hearts.
Brushes like this are meant to focus our attention off the clatter of daily living, and onto the stuff that really matters. I'm SO glad you made it out unscathed. I'm not sure I would've.
There's something in your story for all of us.
If you had taken the speedster, you would have likely been delayed a bit getting it outta the garage, letting it warm up and probably driving it at a lower rate of speed throughout your trip.
Thus delaying the potential near miss. So one "could" say that by taking the truck, you almost got killed.
If it's your time... it's your time. Glad you are ok...
Daang, Dave---scary story for damned sure. Your quick response and the way you handled your vehicle definitely saver your life. And the waay the other driver was, with his color plus being naked---had to be a real wierdo for certain. Buddy---they are out there aiming to spoil our day or worse. Glad you were alert to escape a certain problem. Hi To frannie--I know she was shook up to hear that story.
Yikes! Glad you're o.k.
Thank god and your quick reaction..the good news maybe is that the rest of your life will be even sweeter than it might have been.
Glad you made it David. Riding a motorcycle for a while really does make you look ahead and pay attention to every car that could get you. The crazies are here for a while and you have to have your head on a swivel.
He probably slid on the ice since Canada is permanently frozen. How do you drive a speedster through 5 feet of permanent snow?
Glad you're safe!
Jeff
Lived to tell the tale, Mr. Stroud. And well-told. Coloration of the body, lack of clothing and behavior of the driver makes me want to guess methamphetamine.
Meth psychosis.
Very likely he never saw "you" at all.
Thank you all for the kind words. It means a lot. Nine days now since the event and it hits my brain at least four or five times a day and every time turn the key. My driving habits are now a bit more reserved...even a bit more attentive and that can't be a bad thing I guess. We still enjoy the Speedster and have been out and about a bit.
About the case, it seems now I have about $2,000 damage to my truck from the rock debris etc. as he went by. No sweat, I'll have to pay the $500 deductible at the body shop. My insurance company was sympathetic and says to pay the deductible and they will go after his insurance company and refund my $500.
A small price to pay considering the opposition lost his life.
Not likely the $500 recovery will happen as in Ontario, Canada, if you are insured but under the influence of alcohol, drugs etc. Your insurance is void at the time of the incident. I'm ok with that. He'd dead and I'm able to write this. So, I asked the Police about any valid insurance on the deceased vehicle / driver and they stated because it is on ongoing investigation they could not comment yet. No further questions were to be asked from me.
Now...Ottawa is a small town and my next door neighbor is a Cop and we're on very good terms. While exchanging pleasantries a few days ago he made a bit of a joking but kind comment on my big event last week. Oh...I said, what do you know about it ? He said everything and more as it develops..do you want to hear
more ? I said go for it and he said the official report says the deceased was heavily influenced by some drug/s not yet identified conclusively and there was a device holding the gas pedal to the floor. He was on a joy ride to destruction of some sorts.
It gets closer..., Fran, my Wife works with a girl who has a personal trainer who has a daughter who is close friends with all around and the deceased lad himself. 22 years old, good looking young Buck according to the obits, many many friends who couldn't believe he'd be taken so soon....etc,. He was a High School academic / athletic top 10% achiever, a marathon runner for charity, a sky diver and pretty much an all round good guy...but a little high strung. However...the trainer's daughter said he'd been distraught lately as having being rebuffed recently from a young love he met recently in Bali whom he was saving money up for to get back over to meet her on a backpacking trip in Australia. This well to do kid lived with his Mother and two Sisters nearby and his divorced Father lives in Toronto.
What do we all learn from this...? I'm still trying to figure that out. Conclusions seem elusive. Thanks again for your thoughts. Anyway...I'm over it.
Winslow, eh? That was over two years ago. SHYT !!!

Dave, my good man, I have been sorta out of touch on this site lately, just getting back into it. And so I see your tag, and something about buying a new car -- say what?? If it was building a new car, then I get it, but buying one, and you have such a sweet Subie. Well, I see plenty quick what the story is really all about -- Holy Poop, Batman!!! Times like these and instincts, and training, come in handy. You got out of the way, quick as you could. My 1st thought was you were damned lucky nobody was coming down the other lane when you went there. Then I remembered some of my first year algebra -- word problems about trains and cars leaving at different times and at different speeds. The point here being that if he was heading down the 50 mph road at 90, it would be a good little while before anybody behind him got to the same point. He likely cleared out a good stretch of highway before he nearly took you out. I am so glad you're still breathing -- and writing, and toasting a few to life and friends.
Sorry we missed at Carlisle this year --perhaps next year??
Kelly
