Dash cover and eyebrow: leather vs vinyl

I need to replace the dash cover, eyebrow, and door top rail on my CMC. Does anyone have any regrets with either vinyl or leather?
Plus, I am a novice and a klutz, should I try to do this myself?

We did ours easy enough. I got some leatherette (vinyl leather copy) at the guy that did my seats. You need to get the cover and some dash padding. Then it's a simple stretch and staple or nail and your done. Why not get the padding material which is about 1/4" thick and practice with vinyl and when your happy with your work get the leatherette.

I would skip the leather in Speedsters; since they're not weathertight, leather material would be more exposed to inclement weather. Not only that, leather is a lot more expensive than vinyl. With Cabrios and Convertible D's leather would be more acceptable.

I noticed from the various pictures that some dashes have the padded upholstered trim piece and some have a thin metal trim piece. Is this an authenticity thing or just personal design preference?

The correct way for Speedsters would be the covered trim pieces, for authenticity's sake. I did never installed them on my CMC when I did the dash but might go for it someday... my 2c ;-) ~jJ~

Thomas, on original ones you actually have the padded part on top and a metal moulding underneath. VS does away with the padded part and just keeps the moulding. CMC's are supposed to have the padded part; at least it was included in the kit when you bought it.
