They are called the Meister Schaften or (Meisterschaften)dash badge (1955 ending date for 56, 1956 for 57, 1957 for 58). You can buy them at many 356 Vendors... Or, make it easy and go to JPS's site, look under parts, then call John Steele and get one quick and easy.
I could give you a "from the hip" guess as to their history, but my memory might be wrong. Someone here will give you the rundown on it's true meaning/representation.

It is something to the effect of a quality award in german, but thats all I know??
The Meister Schaften badge simply commerated racing wins and was on the dash of most 356s from 1956 through the middle of the 1958 model year. On 1956 cars the badge showed "1950-1955." On the '57 cars the year range read "1950-1956." And on the 1958 cars it said "1950-1957."
John, do you mean all 356 models or just Speedsters? If not, where would I put one on mine?

The Meister Schaften was on all 356s of that era. On the coupes and cabs it was on the right side of the dash but to the left of the glove box. I think your dash looks great with the built-in A/C vents, but there doesn't seem to be enough space for an MS badge in the correct spot. Maybe you could put it on the left part of the glove box door, if you really want to have the Meister Schaften badge on your car.
If it were me, I'd skip it on your car. Your dash looks good now.

OK John, thanks. You're probably right, but you know how it is with the urge to add a little of this and that. No rush here, I want to make good choices. Now if I chrome plated the fram-a-gramitz and engine turned the fanortin valve......
