David Balser's "street rod" Speedster, a Thunder Ranch car, is up for auction on Ebay with a BIN price of $35,000!
The ad copy says to duplicate the car today would cost $60k.
Keep an eye on this one, Corey. If David gets his asking price, then there's hope for Hoopty in that price range.
David's auction is Ebay Motors item # 230155892925

sheesh. what's happening to the san diego massive?
The company who put the car at auction and then withdrew it is "Jolt & Joe's," which is a Sports Grill and Bar in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter.
Maybe David Balser owns "Jolt & Joe's" or, no, wait, maybe he lost the car in a bet to Jolt or Joe, or both, or, no, wait...

Now relisted.
Nice car...but I'll tell ya, if I'm dropping 30 large I'd rather buy Butch! Not crazy about beehives and that dash set-up.

That car is way cooool! I agree about the dash (need more original looking guages) but ya gotta dig the old school no slot VW wheels. That car is inspiring.
John, He had it up for sale here in Jan. 05

Musta sold it as he isn't listed as the proprietor of Jolt n Joes.

I thought David had tried to sell it a couple of times, but without any luck.
Those "specially created" individual visions of Speedsters are cool, but not everybody's cup-of-tea, apparently.
It'll be interesting to watch this one to see if it hits the high (IMO) BIN.

Current sellers bought the car from David a few weeks ago...
(Their story), they are just resellers.....trying to make a few bucks.....

One of my favorites....lots of inovation. I want a hard tonneau like that....he told me it was an adapted 911 tonneau.

The Speedster on E BAY was sold to another party for a "lot less" than $35,000. and he promised me he was a "COLLECTOR" and was not going to sell the car. I sold the car to him based on that premise and consider seeing this E BAY ad as an outright lie. Granted, he has the right to do what he wants with the car but buyer beware. I did not pay $35,000. for the car and it is not worth that. If you want to buy the car and want the truth please call me and I will give you the FACTS. 760 436 6139

P.S. I designed the car around my stubby linebacker body and unless you have a 29" pantleg you are not going to be able to drive that car. The seat can not realistically be moved back. This is my last post. Revenge is not good Karma. Over and out.
David, I'm sorry that the seller misrepresented his intentions. I've always liked your car. In fact, it was the one that finally convinced me that Speedsters were every bit as attractive as Cobras (what I was originally after). I hope you get the bug again and are just as creative the next time around.
I agree. David's car was unique.
It's a shame that the guy who bought the car (and is now selling it) lied about his intentions. But, you're right, David, there's nothing you can do about it.
So, no six-footers can drive that car, eh? That should make it doubly hard on the seller...he needs a short guy with a lot of money and not much knowledge about what replicas are really worth.

Looking at the seller's feedback, it appears that he's sold a few cars in the past. Too bad he has to be dishonest about it.
I wish eBay had a way to comment about sellers or items besides the feedback rating. For example, when someone sells something as "original," but it's really not, it would be nice to warn potential buyers.
Of course, I guess the smart buyers would check out a site like this to get more information. I also suppose that you could relist the item if you're not happy with it. If you buy an item for $100, there's probably someone right behind you who bid $99 (unless you BIN).
Ok, I'm done ranting about eBay. I still love it, and if it was a real place, I would live there.

Not to make this a political statement or worse yet offend anyone, I'll go to to bat at a different angle.
Seller offered for sale and was compensated for the speedster, buyer turns around and puts car up for resale equates to good old commerce in American so to speak.
Now, "if" said buyer and seller were friends then, seller would have a legit platform to bitch as I would too.
Some of us here buy tinker with kits / replicas and speedsters reselling them ,it's a enjoyable hobby that turns a profit. In todays world, there are some that relish having the opportunity to have a second income to stuff away towards retirment etc.

Alan,
If you knew me you would know I could care less about being offended. This person was not my friend but attempted to be. His portrayal as a buyer was to be a collector and his words to me were he was not going to sell the car. I gave him many extra parts, my entire supply of car cleaners and expensive fibre towels, car covers, my detailed notes and every sales slip and confidential note I had on the car. I wanted to keeep the car local in San Diego and not see it potentially go back east. His words to me were "lets be friends" and not haggle. When someone lies to my face I am offended and that is why I am continuing this rant and do not trust him. You are correct, this is America, and it is a free economy, but be careful who you do business with.

I stand corrected, I would be way pissed too if I had been told by the buyer his "intentions".... then gave up parts and supplies being the nice guy.
You're right, David. A man's only as good as his word!!! No if's and's or but's! I'm kinda old-school that way!

Still, a lot of situations can come up where you might need to sell your toys and if that's the case, of course you would try to get top dollar.

I'm pretty sure, David, that you've convinced me of one thing here. I have GOT to throw some paint on my car.
Thought maybe you could use a chuckle.
I'd be pissed, were I you. And "if eBay was a place," I'd have thrown him out the saloon doors and followed him out into the street with a six-shooting smokewagon. That guy ought to have his head checked. Or dented. Or both.

Price dropped to 31k buy it now.
Bid is a little over 20K...Looks like he may be keeping it after all. :)

Because I placed a bid on the car, I was offered a last chance "buy it now" for 28K.....
On a brighter note, I think my electrical problem may be solved, and therefore ready to cruise the Ghia

That car looks SWEET with the whitewalls! Glad to hear you worked out the electrical gremlins. Will you be taking the car to the Queen Mary car event later this month (18th?).?
Happy Motoring!

The Queen Mary show is Aug 12th....And I could be talked into it...
The Ghia has been through several amateur resterations over the years and the wiring is suspect. Don't know if I can trust it totally, but can't worry about it....That's why I have AAA
There is a very gool show in El Segundo on the 25th or 26th that you don't want to miss if possible....Had the speedster in it for several years, its one of the few shows I enter cars in...
