Ok, I took out the PO's beloved 1/4'' copper fuel line out of the tunnel... I have also replaced the shifter bushing and shifter coupler.  I have been told that a broken clutch tube can sound like a gorilla hammering the inside of the tunnel.. This is as much as a pop as it is a rattle... It is a very sharp and loud pop pop pop.... on a country road... I am embarrassed to take anybody else for a ride... it's not 3 minutes and they ask " what the hell is that popping"?  I have driven on many bumpy roads and I feel it in the shifter, shift knob, a little in the tunnel through the carpet. I don't feel anything on the 2x2 cross brace. I don't feel it in the windshield frame... I think it is definitely in the tunnel. Can a broken clutch tube make that much dang racket??? The car is simply not fun to drive anymore because the rattle depresses me to listen to is...... please help before I set fire to the whole car...
