Can anybody decipher what the markings on this head are? The right side is definitely 356 and the left side starts with 22 but I can tell the rest. The head is off of a 1915cc engine from a Speedster I am currently working on.

Looks like 22?68
I would say 22-08. Uncertain what it could mean... But would be interesting to find out.
Probably just customer order #. What's issue with engine? I'm a negative-nellie that thinks that 94mm bore is borderline asking for issues.
Not a 356 head, I don't think, from the top view.
What do the exhaust ports look like?
This is an original 356 on a dyno. The exhaust ports are rectangular:

Definitely not a 356 head

I don't believe Troy was telling us it was a head for a 356. If you look at the photo in his post the right side of the head is also marked. The right side is marked with "356" but it looks as though there is a fourth number there as well and to me it looks like an "8". With a four digit number underneath each spark plug I'd assume it is some sort of measurement, but what was being measured. Someone with a whole lot more engine knowledge would have to guess at that, I wouldn't have a clue.
It could be that the middle number was erased and it was more clear to write the new number next to it. Either that or one is marked with a five digit number and the other a four digit number. That would make it even more confusing.
How about .022 fly cut and 68cc chamber volume....????
Robert is correct, I know it's not a 356 head. The head is off a "356" Vintage Speedster. I suspect it is a measurement, possibly related to how the head was cut or something.
Troy- is it an original VW or a CB Perf. 044 head?
Troy, the language engine builders use is Greek to me, but I ran the second photo through Photoshop to enhance the detail and the writing is a lot clearer now. Maybe the experts can interpret this:

I tried it, but got a busy signal.
OK, I just hung up. Try again now.
Got thru, first time. But they said my american express card was over my limit.

Gordon,
Why would these be rectangular? Moving air or liquids, they flow faster , in a round pipe. ??
Merry Christmas, from the cold wet, west coast.
I don't know.
Ask the Porsche designers.
Type 4 heads have rectangular exhaust ports, too. Only the VW heads have round exhaust outlets.
Maybe they were looking for a specific back pressure to make the exhaust valves work right? I dunno.........

They are VW, not CB.
I really don't know, Troy. Are the intake passages ported at all? What do the combustion chambers look like? And I hope, when you finally get through, that it's not a dude on the other end of the line. Unless, of course, you're ok with that sort of thing...
MERRY CHRISTMAS, EVERYBODY!

I got it, I got it...got your number off the wall....
Can't believe it Ron. I hadn't heard that one for years and someone played it three days ago. I had a DJ play it at an event the day after. She looked like a three dressed up as a nine, though....

Most engine builders or machinists will stamp the head with cc numbers on the chamber side of the head. Also if fly cut that number would be there too. I know because I have used a marker to right customers name on heads and note or key word as for what is to be done, other than that if you don't know, just check everything.
i have found mass engine builders right size of engine on case or heads and that has been wrong along with transmissions to. Recently a trans I purchased for a customer was to have a 1.48 third and had a 1.52 third gear.
