Can anybody decipher what the markings on this head are?  The right side is definitely 356 and the left side starts with 22 but I can tell the rest.  The head is off of a 1915cc engine from a Speedster I am currently working on.

I don't believe Troy was telling us it was a head for a 356.  If you look at the photo in his post the right side of the head is also marked.  The right side is marked with "356" but it looks as though there is a fourth number there as well and to me it looks like an "8". With a four digit number underneath each spark plug I'd assume it is some sort of measurement, but what was being measured.  Someone with a whole lot more engine knowledge would have to guess at that, I wouldn't have a clue.

It could be that the middle number was erased and it was more clear to write the new number next to it. Either that or one is marked with a five digit number and the other a four digit number.  That would make it even more confusing.

Not a 356 head, I don't think, from the top view.

What do the exhaust ports look like?

This is an original 356 on a dyno.  The exhaust ports are rectangular:

Gordon,

Why would these be rectangular? Moving air or liquids, they flow faster , in a round pipe. ??

Merry Christmas, from the cold wet, west coast.

I really don't know, Troy. Are the intake passages ported at all? What do the combustion chambers look like? And I hope, when you finally get through, that it's not a dude on the other end of the line. Unless, of course, you're ok with that sort of thing...

       MERRY CHRISTMAS, EVERYBODY!

Most engine builders or machinists will stamp the head with cc numbers on the chamber side of the head. Also if fly cut that number would be there too. I know because I have used a marker to right customers name on heads and note or key word as for what is to be done, other than that if you don't know, just check everything.

i have found mass engine builders right size of engine on case or heads and that has been wrong along with transmissions to. Recently a trans I purchased for a customer was to have a 1.48 third and had a 1.52 third gear.
