My CMC has developed troubles shifting. At last service, we replaced the shifter bushing- the shifting was sloppy but easy. After the new bearing, the shift pattern was very tight, but usable. It has gotten progressively worse. It's to the point now that I have a lot of difficulty getting the car into first and second, third and fourth work 75% of the time. When the car is in neutral and the engine is off- the gears change smoothly. I have tried shifting with the clutch in various positions, but no use. I know how to drive a stick- and I had no problems driving before the "repair". My mechanic told me that he would not be able to do anything else because the shift rod was longer than he had space to remove it. Anyone have any ideas what I should be looking for?

The clutch cable does tend to stretch over time (even the wire strands break and they get longer til they break). Have you checked clutch free pedal and adjusted it? I'm assuming he was referring to pulling the shift rod out the front inspection plate - and it probably hits the nose fiberglass. Doubt there is need to do that. Is the coupler under the inspection plate just infront of the rear seat ok (did you replace it when you did the nylon sleeve "bearing")? Did you grease the shift rod when you did the "bearing"?
He replaced the front bushing, and we did lubricate under both the front and rear inspection plates. There is plenty of grease. I will check the tranny fluid- also the clutch cable and I am also thinking of re-adjusting the front shifter plate- I also noticed that the car will shift into reverse when I am reaching for second.
Fred,

Though shortening the cable fixed the shifting, if you start having problems again soon, you may want to remove the peday assembly and check. The hook on the clutch pedal shaft and the eye in the clutch cable wear after time and often one or the other will fail. When close to failure, they can fool you into thinking it is just clutch adjustment. If they do fail, it is not a big deal to replace the shaft or cable.
