Now David, mine is no longer leaking. Oozing, maybe, but leaking? NOPE! Not me!

Ok, a little drip from the oil filter plumbing once in a while, but that's not really leaking, is it? I really, REALLY want to be able to say I solved my leak.

As for cleaning, I just use brake parts cleaner and paper towels. When it was leaking profusely, I think the flow was too high for it to build up a crud layer. Now it's too low (knock wood).
I use Dawn and coffee grinds to clean my hands (sometimes forearms, elbows, nose and forehead). If you have a miracle grow container, the kind you attach to a hose, couldn't it be filled fill with Dawn. That way you have the pressure of the hose nozzle and the Dawn blasting away the grease.
David,
Seriously, your way sounds pretty effective for keeping the upside clean. If you live in a rural area (like I do) the engine compartment gets a little grungy from the dusty roads. Combine that with a little grease and oil and you've got what sometimes looks like what the cat coughed up. I would imagine your method cleans out the fan, shroud and upper end quite nicely. I assume that you keep the engine running after cleaning to dry it out sufficiently.
I use Lane's method to clean the lower end. Of course, I wait until I can't distinguish the various parts before doing so...;)
Speaking of oil leaks, I was having a terrible time with a seeping valve cover. I have the CB bolt-on valve covers with the "C" channel gaskets. I would tighten the bolts until I ripped through gaskets. I resurfaced the face to make sure it sat level on the head. I replaced the heads during the rebuild. I replaced the hoses on the breather lines and tightened them. I tightened the valve cover breather vents and nothing worked. Until I realized that I never applied a smear of silicone to seal the breather vents to the valve cover.
No more seeping, no more leaking.
