My '79 IM is built on a '66 VW pan w/ 4 wheel drum brakes and ball joints. I am contemplating converting to disc brakes at least in the front.
First, is there any reason to keep the 5 lug setup - other than for looks? It seems that the 4 lug setups are less pricey. The wheels are to be replaced anyway.

Secondly, the disc conversion kits are for either standard or dropped spindles. How can a "newbie" tell what I currently have?

Thanks and Happy New Year!

First, what type of wheels are you going to put on? Wide five is more of a classic look and there are some nice wheels out there with that stud pattern. I'm in the process of switching my 4 bolt to a small pattern Porsche 5 bolt so I can mount my Porsche mags. It is true that the smaller, 4 bolt pattern brakes are cheaper. If you haven't already, check out CB Performance for brakes.

One issue with the VW/356 5 bolt pattern is the ease of warping drums/rotors from over-tightening lugs. Tire store mechanics use air tools set at 300 lbs to attach the wheels and have done some damage to my beetles 5 bolt drums. The four bolt pattern is probably stronger for rotors as well.
