Jack the wheel off the ground and give it a good shake to checking for wheel bearing being loose, then pull the wheel and try to gently pry on the caliper to see if you are geting lateral movement continue to disassemble and check for wear marks on the rotor, remaining pad thickness, guide pin wear etc.
Spending the extra time to completely tear down a problem area as more often than not I run across something that when reassembled allows for piece of mind out onnthe roads.
If all of that turns out well, then check for a warped rotor. May machine out if the problem is minor and the rotor has not already been turned.

If you do remove the rotor for machining, replace the brake pads at the same time to eliminate any possible issue with them. (cheap and easy at the time).

You describe the exact same sounds that my car was making... so I changes the rear pads and got er on the road again... only to find out that it was the transmission and not the brakes. I (like you maybe) though the sound was the brakes, since it is the closest sound to your ears and assumed? If, when the car is on jack stands and you spin the tires, and it doesn't make the same noise that you were hearing... check the tranny.
