Do the bumpers support the body?

I have a CMC which does not have the bumpers setup yet. I was wondering if the brackets help support the body at all.

Can I see some pictures of how the bumpers hook up to the frame especially the back bumper. I think I am going to have to do some metal work.

No, the bumpers do not support the body.

Once you get the mounts positioned through the body, you should have about 1/8" - 3/16" clearance all around them. Then, to keep them from vibrating, fill the void around the mounts (between the mount and body) with clear silicon caulk. I use a stock, '54 -'66 VW sedan bumper mount grommet on each mount to dress them off, attached by simply glueing it to the mount metal with clear silicon caulk.

The bumpers don't do squat. The bumpers barely support the bumpers!

Just imagine how much protection your car will get from Fiberglass (plastic) bumpers!

They're totally cosmetic.

Now you can get real steel bumpers. But $$$$ yikes..

I know the bumpers are fiberglass and dont protect much but I was more thinking about where the metal brackets go through the body. It sounds like that is not the case.

Nope, they just stick through the holes in the body. They're pretty flimsy, but we don't tell the friendly folks at the DMV that.

In fact if the slots aren't cut large enough the vibration will put spider cracks in the gel coat. The front inner bumper brackets do support front if you fiberglass in the splash shields.
